Ninety cases of liquor seized in San Pedro customs raid
It was never reported to us but News Five has confirmed that customs officials made a major bust in San Pedro earlier this month. Details are still sketchy but information is that approximately two weeks ago a tip led officers to an area in San Pedro Town where they found a container with ninety cartons of assorted liquor. According to Comptroller of Customs Gregory Gibson, the alcohol was immediately seized and their investigations have led them to a prominent San Pedro businessman. Apparently, that individual is now negotiating with the department for an out-of-court settlement, but Gibson says whatever deal is reached will include a fine of two hundred thousand dollars. The case won’t close there either as Customs officials believe the liquor was snuck out of the Corozal Free Zone and investigations are now underway to determine how that happened. As for the fate of the liquor, Gibson says if they can’t find someone willing to buy the booze for export, all the alcohol will have to be destroyed.
