Robbery victim turns tables on attacker
Too many times in this newscast, we report that business owners have been shot during brazen armed robberies. But tonight word out of Dangriga is that this time around, two thieves picked the wrong man to jack. Just after three this afternoon, money collector for Santiago Castillo Limited, Melvin Torres, had just been paid by the owners of the Nang Cheng Supermarket on Commerce Street. He got into the delivery truck when two men armed with handguns approached the passenger door, put a gun to Torres’ face and said, “run the bag”. Apparently Torres pretended to reach for the money bag but instead pulled out his licensed handgun and fired a single shot. The bullet hit the assailant in the chest and he died where he fell. The deceased has since been identified as nineteen year old Kevin Flores, a resident of Mahogany Heights. According to Chief Executive Officer of the San Cas Group, Santino Castillo, all his employees have been on high alert as the company has been robbed eight times so far this year. The most recent attack took place on Tuesday in Belize City when thirteen hundred dollars was stolen from another employee who had been making a sale on Fairweather Street. Torres was briefly held by police for questioning but was released as cops consider the shooting an act of self defence. They are still seeking the second suspect.
