Cabinet establishes desk to reach Belizeans living abroad
Cabinet met in regular session today and at its conclusion, a release refers to four issues tabled. What caught our eyes was a decision to engage the large Belizean Diaspora living in the United States and U.K. It was decided that a focal point will be established to deal primarily with the Diaspora. The release indicates that figures obtained from the Inter-American Development Bank indicate that remittances from Belizeans living in the USA increased from one hundred and forty six million dollars in 2003 to two hundred and ten million dollars in 2007. It was silent however on remittances in 2008 or the beginning of 2009 which has been predicted to drop due to the economic downturn.
