Church arms itself with attorney for Holy war against UNIBAM

The Council of Churches has made it clear that it opposes the case filed by the United Belize Advocacy Movement (UNIBAM), which is challenging section fifty-three of the criminal code. UNIBAM is seeking to have the law declared as unconstitutional, claiming that it criminalizes sexual relationships between same gender couples. It’s an extremely controversial matter which has caught the attention of international organizations. The case is yet to be heard in the Supreme Court, but it is probably the most controversial topic in recent years for the council since decriminalization can open the doors even further to topics such as same sex marriages. The sanctity of centuries old church doctrine is at stake, and it was all being hotly discussed at the Council of Churches quarterly meeting last week. On Wednesday, the council released a formal position and the President of Council of Churches, Canon Leroy Flowers is speaking publically, arguably as defender of the faith.

“We are of the view that the constitutional challenge, first of all, is unfortunate for Belize in that we have made it the very preamble of our constitution acknowledges the supremacy of God. Having said that, however, we are very much aware that the general public supports the churches’ point of view. However, we are of the view and we need to remind our members that in the courts, the law courts, that is not where the decision is made as to whether it is wrong or right and that’s very important for our members to understand. And while we respect the right of these people to go to court, we need our members to understand what is the churches’ position on this matter and that is that we do not, we would not want the law to be repealed. But if it is, the church would still not support that point of view. And that point of view is that that is an unnatural act, which is sin, which is contrary to the very word of God in the nature by which mankind is procreated. It is between a man and woman; it is not between two men and two women. That is an impossibility and, therefore, we need to understand without becoming emotionally hype because—and this is one of the things that we would like to appeal to our members. First of all, we need to be informed. For instance, many of the organizations who will be giving support to UNIBAM on this matter, I am certain that they would not be willing to readily accept their children engaging in this very act. And so it is a double sword as it were. On one hand, it’s because of the human rights issue but on the other hand, it’s a moral issue. For us, it’s a moral issue that we must be guided by the Holy Spirit and the word of God.”
Section fifty-three of the criminal codes says that “carnal intercourse against the order of nature” is punishable by imprisonment of up to ten years.
What about the men that do it to women? It doesn’t just criminalize same-sex acts, it also criminalizes men who like to explore women’s “back entrance”. I am sure there are many men who think it’s disgusting that men do that to each other, and then go home and do it to their women. As for the hypocrisy of many people who bring in the so-called religious arguments – how you could ever consider consensual relations between two adults more dangerous or evil or damaging to society than rape (between any sexes) or murder I don’t know, but the way some people react it seems that is what they believe. THe Bible says a lot of nonsense which we don’t follow or believe in now. Leviticus especially. Don’t pick and choose your Bible quotes to suit your own prejudices. I hope everyone in the Council of Churches is blessed with a kind, loving homosexual child, nephew or niece who is allowed to grow up without stigma and show them all that they are not evil, not unnatural, and just wanting to be loved for what they are like everyone else in this world.

We are living in a modern world and not a fantasy – the reality is that there are 3 gays/bi out of 5 men. In Belize, it has started to become more obvious due to the fact that the public is tolerant.
A sin (for Church purposes) is when a gay man tries to become heterosexual..fights his inner emotions against his will and marries a woman. That individual is lying to himself, wife, family the church but not God. If the Churches believe that God made us all, then why question it! God made a gay man – GAY!
Same sex marriages should be approved in this country. Look at the neighboring country of Mexico – they approved despite all the religious set backs and EXPENSES …. Dont you think everyone, particularly the church, should back down, use those funds for a better use. There are many poor people within the lenght and breath of this nation who would love to have a small box of groceries – the basics- than spending in court.

This is utterly ridiculous. I always thought being gay is about sexual preference not about procreation. Straight men wont turn gay because other men are doing the nasty in privacy. The church has got its priorities twisted. what happened to taking the side of the meek and poor etc etc, not picking battles with fruity tooties….

Do you people know that you are blaspheming against my God by saying that he made men gay and the Bible says a lot of nonesence?Please be more careful when casting your aspersions on Him. God does not make people gay, and he does not want people to become Gay, but he loves every man, Gay or not.
He wants any man Gay, Murderer, Thief, Substance Abusers, all of them to repent, and ask him to come into their hearts, and they will be wiped clean and become new creatures and are saved. Believe it or not, a Gay man will become straight when this happens, as they will be convicted by the Holy Spirit that what he is doing is wrong along with any other sin.

Why can’t the church just stay out of people’s bedrooms? Love and let love! Religion always manages to be judgmental when the church itself has committed a multitude of sins throughout history. If we’re going to quote scripture then what about the lost gospel of Thomas. They decided to leave that one out of the bible, perhaps because it said things not in their favor.

The law should be repealed and the following included “… any man or woman engaging in carnal intercourse against the order of nature will be shot on the spot and person coming ten feet to even the remains of this gay will be castrated and sentenced to 10 years in prison.”

@Rufus, the Old testament Laws you posted are for Jews in that era. When a Law is broken, you must pay the penalty, whether you should be killed, sacrifice a lamb etc…. We need not live by these Laws anymore as the penalty has already been paid by the sacrifice of the Lamb of God.
It’s easy to say, just let these people live how they want. But the reality is that it is of evil. If this is allowed then who is to say that Polygamy should be allowed, pedophilia, etc…. This marks the first battle in Belize about an agenda, with a lot of money and international support behind it, to educate / indoctrinate SCHOOLCHILDREN to accept that homosexuality is normal and acceptable behavior.
There will always be gays, many because they were molested as children, some “born that way,” but I think it is not natural, not what God itnends, and not what our children should be taught.

The Bible was my only frame for religeous refference and conviction for the first forty years of my life, because I was thought that its contents should not be question, such as Adam and Eve family been the only human family on this planet; yet Cain, after he killed his brother Abel went to the land of Nod and found a wife;???????.I also saw that it was (is) filled with the expression of the wrath of God, yet I read in it that Jesus said his principles of love and mercy is the same as that of His Father: and that His Father is also the Father of all the human race.And the real clincher is that we are to love and forgive our enemies. But the old testament talk about eye for an eye.
Even when he was on the cross in pain beyond human imagination His words to His Father on behalf enemies was, forgive them for they know not what they do. Ignorance and fear have caused human beings to do some diobolical things to our human brothers/sisters. I wonder what Jesus would say about homosexuals if he was here on earth? I discovered in very extensive information about Jesus that is not in the Bible, that on one occation he rebuke his diciples because of talking down to a woman that was in the sex trade, and he expressed His understanding of her condition, and that same woman later on became a leader of the His gospel.
With regards to Jesus’s and human sexuality, I have discovered in extensive information about his questions and answer session with the deciples, that question of sexual nature was the only question that he refused to address when asked. It is so ludicrous, as far as I’m consern, to see the clergy arming themselves with human prejudicial laws to so call defend God. These folks need to come out of the dark ages. I’m not condoning nor definding homosexuality, because I believe that its too complex a matter for someone like myself who can’t understand how someone is sexually attractive to the same gender.

I grew up within Christianity, both my parents are Christians. I went to a catholic primary school, a catholic high school as well as a catholic 6th form! Now tell me this, why am i an atheist & GAY? Religion does nothing but divide people. I can understand that people need some thing to believe in but must they make it hard for EVERYONE if it does not reflect their arbitrary moral practices. I grew up with only brothers, no sisters. How could i have not been born gay? i mean, my brothers are the most masculine guys you can ever meet.

Take about Caribbean Machismo! Now tell me if that isn’t injustice. Belize already has a high crime rate, and adding hate crime will only make things worse! Some of the brightest and talented people are homosexuals [guys and girls]. How can Belize get a semblance of growth when these incredibly hypocritical institutions are chasing the people away FROM THEIR OWN COUNTRIES?! Its is absurd and completely dumbfounding!

Turn away from your wicked ways, that is all the Almighty ask of you. You can turn away from it because all you have done is feed your mind convincing yourself that you were made like that and that is a blatant lie, you are not. Everyone in this world faces challenges and we need to confront them, but if we let it take upon us it will devour. Being gay does not mean that you cannot change it, of course you can, it was set before you for you decide what you want but does not mean it is right.
The law refers to “carnal knowledge against the order of nature.” Why aren’t naturalists being consulted to resolve this argument? There are over 1500 species documented to have same sex behavior and Belize is rich in many of them. It seems homosexuality is right in line with nature. Or are all those penguins going to hell too?
If marriage is about procreation don’t forget to prohibit menopausal women from marrying, have the government check your proposed husband’s sperm count, and consider nullifying all opposite-sex marriages that have not produced children within 3 years. And outlaw divorce as well. In the meantime if you don’t want gay men to marry, don’t marry one.
The bible is a farce, when will you people come out of the Stone Ages and stop quoting that book.

I stand strong with the christian society, we will not entertained the gay right movement to impact our society or our family. Our people need to realize the christian is the most powerful force in the world, the only time the battle has ever been lost is when they choose to fight without God. To hear so many educated people speak the way they do about God make you understand what the bible speaks about when it tell you about these educated fool. I love all my people in my country but i love God more and we are soldier of almighty i am prepare to war with the many to keep the integrity of my country and of God.
