Recommendations tabled to improve management of Chiquibul

According to Manzanero, they have compiled recommendations that can raise finances and improve the management of the forest reserve.

Raphael Manzanero

“In terms of the analysis that was done, it can be contemplated that we should be able to generate up to one million dollars every year by selling the carbon stocks in the Chiquibul. Of course, with that amount of funds, we would be able to do good management of the Chiquibul forest; management, really meaning preventing the illegal activities taking place there because one of our key limitations is really the limited resources.  We need more resources on the ground, we need more security agents on the ground. We need more police, more B.D.F. to patrol the border. We need really the construction of conservation posts.

Raphael Manzanero

There are two of them already but we need to conduct more monitoring of that Western border. Our belief is that with the recent more occurrences taking places in Chiquibul, there is also the threat of an escalation of things down there. So we are concerned that we need more of the ground forces, the security forces because we are doing the environmental work, but in some of these areas we cannot really do it safely.  What we are saying is that of course we need really to think back again, the strategies on the ground because the impacts are really coming from a trans-boundary element. In other words, it’s coming from Guatemalans. So we need really to devise strategies on how to intervene and reduce those kinds of threats and conflicts. So that would be one of our key recommendations. We also would want the ministers of the environment from Belize and Guatemala to be able to elevate those kinds of discussion points.”

Attendees at today’s event included representatives from the Forest Department, Institute of Archaeology, Police, B.D.F. and the Immigration Department.

    Dear Sir/madam,

I believe the country continue to play, party politics at the expenses of our country, and our people, these Central American Aliens come in this country and do not respect our country or our people, and are still given the right to become nationalize in this country after all the illegal activities they have perform in this country. The chiquibul is not the only concern, these people are doing illegal logging all over the country of Belize. As i say at hope that one day they will be an asset to either of the political party. The problem can be address if the official want it to be done. Why is it that no Belizean try to go and cut a tree in Guatemala.

this is where GOB should focus there efforts, not amendments to our constitution, not GSU intimidating and beating up our Belizean brothers and sisters for 1 stick of weed. oh but remember SEDI said we have no borders, they are artficial. so that’s why this GOB allows Guatemalans to rape our forest and fauna. shameful disgraceful crowd. have you noticed recently an upsurge in UDP nationalism, everything is done in the best interest of the good people of Belize. let him explain how allowing the Guatemalans 7 miles into our forest is in our best interest!!!!
