BTB’s ‘I am Belize’ logo competition winner selected

Story PictureThe Belize Tourism Board’s I Am Belize campaign officially got underway today and the winning logo was selected. Twenty-two year old John McDougall caught the selection committee’s attention with his piece that brought together several important aspects of the Jewel. This morning McDougall was presented with a cheque for five hundred dollars and signed over the rights to his work of art. McDougall says he’s been painting since his childhood years and entered this competition, not expecting a reward. He told us how he came up with the winning logo.

John McDougall, Winner, I Am Belize Logo Competition
“It’s basically about Belize and the different cultures and voices of—like different trees and different foods we produce in Belize.”

Delahnie Bain
“How did you come up with that idea?”

John McDougall
“Well, some of it came from my mom and with different objects I have on display and putting all the pictures and everything into one.”

Laura Esquivel, Director, Product Development, B.T.B.
“We held the logo competition for about three weeks. It was advertised and open to all amateur artists we received twenty-eight entries and this is the winner of those twenty-eight entries. The I Am Belize campaign really seeks to educate and sensitize Belizeans as to how our individual actions impact the country’s image.”

Delahnie Bain
“Okay, what stood out about this particular logo above the others?”

Laura Esquivel
“Well, honestly looking at it, it had a lot of creativity, the person, Mr. McDougall, put a lot of thought into it. It had so many different aspects of Belize captured in this logo.”

Delahnie Bain
“Where can we look forward to seeing this logo after this?”

Laura Esquivel
“After this, immediately following this you will be seeing an ‘I am Belize’ Caravan Crew out, particularly in the September celebrations. Between the tenth and the twenty-first our crew will be popping up at public events as well as they could pop up at schools, they could pop up at people’s homes.”

The first event to be held under the ‘I am Belize’ campaign will be a test of residents’ patriotism. Members of the caravan crew will approach random citizens on the streets as pay them fifty dollars cash if they can sing the National Anthem without any mistakes.
