Belizeans take 2nd place for tourism essay, cycling race
They say that nice guys finish last … but tonight we have news of some nice Belizeans—a guy and a gal actually—who finished second. One is eleven year old Alexander Fonseca who was one of two runners up in the Conde Nast “My Caribbean” essay contest. Fonseca, the son of Minister of Education Francis Fonseca and his wife Gina, collected his five hundred U.S. dollar scholarship on Tuesday at the Caribbean Tourism Organization conference in Puerto Rico. Meanwhile, not far away on the island of Martinique, Belizean cyclist Shalini Zabaneh was also taking second place in the road race event at the seventh Caribbean Cycling Championships. She finished third in the individual time trial. Another Belizean, Roger Troyer, finished twenty-second in the men’s road race. The two were scheduled to return home today.
