Forged papers allowed undervalued car imports

Customs officials have declined to comment on a case of forgery that Belize City police are investigating, telling News Five that the detective work has only just begun. According to the authorities, Miguel Uk, an enforcement officer with the Customs Department, reported that between the period of August eighth and October nineteenth of this year, the forged signatures of three custom officers were placed on forty-two documents that state the official value of used vehicles imported into the country. The forged forms, showing far less than the actual value, enabled the importers to pay much less duty and GST that they should have. Investigators are focussing on a single suspect believed to be responsible for the bogus documents.
