Brazilian musicians schedule two performances

Story PictureThey call themselves “Palha de Milho”—corn straw in English—and they hail from Brazil. The quartet, here for two concerts, play that country’s varied music, creating sounds that Belizeans should find new and exciting.

Fernando Bittencourt, Band member, Palha de Milho
“We have been playing together for more or less fifteen years this kind of regional music, folklore music from Brazil and I think the most important, that makes a difference, instrument is a twelve string guitar with a different tuning that’s used there in the countryside and we came here sponsored by the Embassy of Brazil in a cultural programme to make those two shows, one here in Belize and one in Belmopan; Belmopan Friday, Belize, Sunday afternoon.”

“There’s a very interesting song where the violin imitates some animal farms and it’s very interesting.”

“We have blocks of songs from regional, samba, bossanova, etc. We try to make a mix of those instruments. I play base, there is twelve string guitar, violin, and percussion and all this mixed makes a kind of different sound. I don’t think Belizeans have already heard something like that.”

The band will play in Belmopan at the George Price Centre at eight on Friday night and in Belize City on Sunday at three at the Bliss. The show in Belmopan is free while in Belize City, tickets will sell for five dollars.
