Cop arrested after running roadblock
Another cop is in trouble tonight after he barrelled through a police checkpoint on the Northern Highway carrying a cargo of uncustomed liquor and cigarettes. Off duty police constable thirty year old Andres Hernandez sped through the checkpoint at the Boom cut-off around five-thirty this morning, was chased by Ladyville cops, turned around at mile six and a half after some bags of goods were thrown out of his car, and was finally apprehended back at the original police checkpoint. It turns out that Hernandez was driving his mom’s unlicensed vehicle without plates and he was charged for those two traffic offences. And what about the stuff found off the highway? It turned out to include six cases of uncustomed cigarettes and four cases of Absolut Vodka and Johnny Walker Black. According to police officials, smuggling charges would be difficult to successfully prosecute. When we contacted Comptroller of Customs Greg Gibson, he said he had not been notified of the incident but is very interested in investigating with an eye to pursuing his own administrative remedies.
