Lovell takes first Rosado memorial cycle race
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re locked into this session of Sports Monday.
Week four of the R.F.G. Cup Tournament found the Belize Defence Force making a stand at the M.C.C. Grounds against the Revolutionary Conquerors of Dangriga.
Five minutes in, B.D.F.’s Deon ‘Pussy’ Flowers get this shot at goal but the Dangriga defence hangs real tough.
On the other end Kareem Haylock gets this bird’s eye view of the B.D.F. goal but fails to convert.
The army then shows potency off the set piece as Khalil Velasquez fires this violent right foot that forces the keeper into a diving save.
In the meantime we’re also wandering how Deon Flowers fails to convert right here but he obviously does.
Of course we could say the same thing about Kareem Haylock on this move at the other end as his offering inches outside the far upright. Meanwhile people, goalkeeper John Chimilio of the Conquerors gives his body for the team when he crashes into the streaking Evan Mariano. He would recover and return – at the half we have a scoreless ballgame.
In second half, Flowers tries to move the scoreboard but his left foot unleashes a high riser.
Kareem Flowers then answers for Griga with this left foot punch that never was gonna get by Charlie Slusher. Keep your eyes on this play as Kareem Flowers gets taken down inside the eighteenth. The referee rules penalty.
David Trapp steps up for the Revolutionary Conquerors to beat Slusher and give the visitors a 1-zip lead sixty-two minutes in.
Deon McCauley who makes his appearance for B.D.F. in the second half take this long range floater but the substitute keeper for Dangriga, Francis Williams, handles his business.
For sure though folks today does not belong to Deon Flowers as he misses this open look at goal.
So on this press, Flowers sets table For Azize Swazo who unfortunately sends the pill into orbit.
Nevertheless as the eighty-ninth minute when it looks like Revolutionary Conquerors would get all three points Erwin Flores picks up this loose ball and shakes the net to force the 1-1 regulation tie.
In other action around the league Santels doubled Georgetown Ibayani 2-1. F.C. Belize held the Dolphins to a 1-1 draw out at San Pedro while Suga Boys Juventus sullied Wagiya clean sheet with a 5-1 blast inside the People’s Stadium.
Checking the schedule for Week five, Georgetown Ibayani will host Hankook Verdes Saturday night down South. Also on Saturday night at seventy-thirty p.m. inside the People’s Stadium San Pedro Dolphins will visit Suga Boys Juventus. Revolutionary Conquerors will be at home on Sunday against F.C. Belize and Santels battles the B.D.F. at the M.C.C. Grounds.
In other football news here’s the weekend results from play in the Super League. Texmar Boys blanked Belmopan Bandits 4-zip. Alpha Barcelona burned Kraal Road 1-nil. Barrio Fino F.C. at Roots F.C. battled to a 2-2 stalemate. Benque D.C. United edged Adventures 2-1. Kraal Road shook up Kelly Street F.C. 3-0. Delta Sport dumped Southside United 2-0 and Belmopan shut down Viper Lake 1-zip.
In Billiards news, Larry Lisbey took the National Nine Ball Singles Marathon title at Orange Walk on Sunday and then on Monday he beat Manuel Ramos to grab the Chendo Urbina two day marathon billiards title. We say congrats.
Turning to softball scene, action in the interoffice league marathon which was staged yesterday inside the Rogers Stadium, the defending champion Customs/Central Bank unplugged Belize Telemedia to claim the 2007 showcase Marathon. We say congratulations. Regular season gets off on Wednesday twenty-sixth October.
Meanwhile Belize a steady drizzling prevailed in Ranchito, Corozal at the start of yesterday’s first ever Dr. Miguel Rosado Cycle Classic with fifty-two riders making the start in the sixty-four miles elite category and they’re off.
Very quickly this eight man break away featuring three Santino riders and five C-Rays cement their grip on the lead. People we just couldn’t resist showing this long stretch of riders in their colours that are chasing the lead eight.
And here they are at the turn around point at the By-Pass roundabout outside Orange Walk.
Of course on the way back the eight man lead remains intact.
Here’s a close up look at the leaders who are firmly on control of this particular ride.
By the time the race returns to Ranchito it a three man sprint to the finish – Gregory Lovell takes charge and it’s no longer a contest as he streaks in for the early win. Congratulations to Gregory Lovell of Santino, the fastest man in town, who was clocked in two hours, thirty-two minutes, sixteen seconds for this W. Elstan Coleman and Jeovani Choto, both of C-Ray take second and third respectively; Jovanni Leslie pulled up fourth while Brandon Cattouse rounds out the top five. Forty-three riders finished the event.
Gregory Lovell, Winner
“I was just riding the race my best noh, and with my team I have the confidence to win the race again. I have the speed and well I just read the race and ride the best I can and follow whatever break that was on the road and I have to know who I need to go with and just work together and do my best.”
Elstan Coleman, 2nd Place
“This race was very fast. The team had numbers but when it came down to the line Mr. Lovell is one of the best. I tried my best to win the race but you know what they always say, ‘may the best man win’. I have been here improving every time and it’s just a matter of time because the C-Ray Cycling Club is still trying to figure out each other. I’m not with the team a year. We are still figuring out each other and the Santino’s Team has been around for a while. They beat us on experience but the next race we will see what happen.”
On the female side Marinette Flowers beat Kaya Cattouse and Esperanza Leal in that order to pick up the W. We say congratulations to Marinette Flowers.
Hey folks that’s our show for today. See you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
