Midday murder of Businessman; motive is robbery

City gangs may be working on peace amongst each other but violent crime on productive citizens it appears is on the rise. On Wednesday night, a Sandhill store owner was gunned down during a robbery of his establishment and before one this afternoon; another businessman was murdered during a robbery of his store.  Neighbors and workers in the vicinity of Eagle One Hardware, say the owner was a very nice guy and anything that people asked for, he would give. The storeowner also sponsored a local city sports team. Even those who only heard of his kindness feel the shock of the pointless murder. News Five was first on the scene and Isani Cayetano files this report.

Isani Cayetano, Reporting

The body of thirty-five year old Wendell Reimer lay motionless in a pool of blood a few feet away from his business.

The proprietor of Eagle One Hardware, near mile four and a half on the Northern Highway, was shot twice during an early afternoon heist.  Shortly after one o’clock a trio of men entered the store posing as customers.  They proceeded to inquire about specific items before producing a firearm.  Reimer, upon realizing that it was a robbery in progress, attempted to flee the premises.  He was unsuccessful.

Sgt. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer

“Mr. Reimer ran out [of] the hardware store where he received two gunshot wounds, one fatally injuring him.  This occurred sometime after one this afternoon.  Its an early investigation but we know that it was perpetrated by three, dark complexioned male persons.”

Fitzroy Yearwood

Those individuals, according to several witnesses, then fled up the highway in the direction of Haulover Creek where a getaway boat had been stationed.  One of the men was reportedly seen running barefooted with a pair of slippers and a small cashbox in his purchase.

Sgt. Fitzroy Yearwood

“Witnesses are saying that they ran up the highway.  We dont know if they had a vehicle nearby.  All [of] that is what were trying to establish first noh”

Isani Cayetano

“Any arrests so far? Anybody detained?”

Sgt. Fitzroy Yearwood

“No arrests as yet but we do have two persons detained for questioning.”

Patrick Jones, Love TV

“Now you said inside that they came in pretending to buy.  [Do you have] any idea what they pretended to buy?”

Sgt. Fitzroy Yearwood

“I dont have all that details as yet Patrick.  This is really early so I cant say all that but I know that they did pretend to be customers and pulled out their weapons [and thats] where Mr. Reimer ran to try to save his own life and was fatally injured.”

Patrick Jones, Love TV

“Was he alone in the shop?”

Sgt. Fitzroy Yearwood

“That I cant say Patrick [its] part of the [ongoing] investigation.”

It was later confirmed that a third suspect had been detained at a marina adjacent to the Shell Service Station near mile two and a half on the Northern Highway.  There a swarm of officers descended upon the scene where a small vessel, believed to be the getaway boat, had been moored. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.

    Heartless Murder!
Why can’t they leave an innocent friendly and kind businessman alive for the sake of his young family and to be a model and an inspiration for others around the city?

  8. Belize Journal says:

What a disgrace. It is nothing but mud (or is is blood?) on the face of our government. Wendell was as nice a person as one can imagine.
Is this how it ends for us in Belize? To be shot in the head or the back? To have the media cover you on the ground, lying in a pool of your own blood? Being thrown into the back of some run down pickup truck?
Every day you head out for work and you wait for it. Today can be your day. Do the politicians believe that they are immune? Or is it just a matter of odds?
Why do we play games with the devil?

  9. Al says:

OMG, people have to be afraid to start a business in Belize to support themself. The price of a life in Belize is worth so little, as these crooks will kill a man for a dime. Please whom ever reads this pray for the country, please pray, only God can change the evil in Belize, so pray without ceasing until God moves.

  10. Smartlenijones says:

Why is Patrick asking what they pretended to buy? why is that important? they didnt intend to buy anything. and it;s a hardware store…so if they said i wanted to buy curtains…maybe hte man should have had a clue… and what if htey asked to buy a shovel…what then, does it really matter. a businessman is dead, adn the government is doing nothing to solve crimes. or do anything about gang members. let them kill each other, end the truce, but stop killing innnocent poeple.

  11. Voice in the land of words only says:

The picture of the deceased’s body is so insensitive and disrespectful to him, his family and friends.

  12. shenco says:

Please stop killing people who are working. We only have a few.
It seem that people who have no apparent good reason for life , kill the ones that have a good reason to live.

  13. Shattered says:

Completely Sad. His wife was at his side, laid his head on her lap and close to their first baby that is due any day. That’s how this “soon to be daddy” died, leaving his beloved wife.

Ok, let’s get to the business part of this, P.M., shall we as locals go and risk our lives and clean out this F@*#ing city? Because we are about ready.

  14. CEO says:

Forget the 9th amendment and deal with this crap!

There are enough laws on the books to put away these criminals!

  15. Belama Resident says:

All these murders in this area, and Min Singh still refuses to OPEN THE BELAMA POLICE STATION. that area of the Northern Highway is the area with the most new business in the city.the police station should not only have one police man in the side room, it should be expanded and visible, at least 4 police men on each shift with vehicles to do patrol in the area.Come on Min Singh, you must know that paying GSG to hold it down was not going to work.

  16. Shattered says:

Please, get an execution squad Barrow.

  17. RadicalBelizean says:

This is ridiculous now. Every business owner now need to arm themselves and deal with these guys away.

What the business community now need to do is heighten their security with cameras, a locked door system where potential customers are seen on a camera, and then they are buzzed into the store. So only those they recognise as regulars come in. It may mean that some people will start shouting about discrimination, but so be it. if people want to behave like animals then treat them as such.

  18. shenco says:

Every time the dig the grave to put away an innocently killed Belizean ,we should dig an even deeper hole to put the murders in. And make sure the get filled up. Prison does not seem to scare them anymore.

  19. Belizeanabroad says:

when will they start to make an example of these murderers?Belize is getting worst than a war zone, and it’s these useless half educated fools killing innocent hard working people.please mr. minister do something.

  20. McBowen says:

They catch them, then there is insufficient evidence and they walk free… this is a very sad case, another one at that. These HARD WORKING Belizeans, trying to make a life/future for their family, and then along comes these hoodlums and rip these family apart. I agree, I may not be God, but HANG them HIGH.
And, Government, why do u think the people elect you, not for well put together debates and big highfalutin speeches, but to guide us through this country and protect us as a people.
Send individuals out to study forensics, there’s a list of all different types of forensics studies out there. Invest in Criminal Labs, and put intelligent people worthy of these positions, who wont taint or obstruct cases, so when case time comes up, these stupid police and prosecutors have materials to defend and win their cases.
these criminals all leave behind, so much evidence at a time, LOOK AT THIS ONE RUNNING AWAY BAREFOOT> OMG! THAT”S more than enough to build a case against.
GOB get wise, or should we the people do the jobs ourselves
