Murder on South Creek Bridge

Karl Galvez

In Belize City, where the homicides are at all time high, a resident of King Parks was walking his girlfriend home when he met his death in the deadly South Creek area. Karl Galvez was shot at close range to his chest on Saturday night. His mother received the dreaded call after ten o’clock and as the family grieves his demise, they want his murder solved. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

Thirty-three year old Karl Galvez, along with his girlfriend, were crossing this wooden bridge adjoining South Creek to Curassow Street around ten o’clock on Saturday night when a lone gunman on bicycle fired a single shot in their direction.  The bullet found its mark on the left side of Galvez’s chest, fatally wounding him.

“All we undastand when my niece call my daughter and my daughter call me and say, “mommy” ih say “Kim just call and say dehn kill Karl.”  I get up and my sista come and my sista say ih identify the person as her son.  Ih say because she mi think dehn mi wah ker her pan [di scene.]  Dehn gaan fi her but dehn neva ker her pan di scene, dehn bring ahn da hospital and she mi annoyed cause she had to wait forty-five minutes ya before dehn bring ih son body.”

Galvez, a resident of Fourth Street in the Kings Park area, was executed without reason.  His family members say they are unaware of any previous incident that may have resulted in his demise.  The bloodstained planks on the bridge is where he fell after being hit.

“What can you tell us about Karl?  Was he one to associate with different individuals who may be involved in any kind of criminal activity?”

“No. No. Noh Karl, and I as his aunt I could safely say Karl da mi wah nice person.  Anytime you see Karly da he one di ride.  Everybody know ah as Karly.  He one di ride or ih have ih lee niece with a pan ih bike or so.”

The family, like the investigating officers, has very little leads to go on in terms of solving this crime.  Nonetheless Galvez’s aunt has a stern message to his killer.

“All I wahn say [to] whosoever do it [that dehn wah] find da person deh and whateva dehn have to do with ahn mek dehn do with ahn, mek dehn deal with ahn and just like how we di feel fu weh dehn do to my nephew and my sista son.  But dehn say God noh di sleep noh and revenge da noh fi we, revenge da fi God.  So whosoever do it dehn will find out da who.”

“By any chance does his girlfriend live in that neighborhood?  I understand he’s a resident or he was a resident of Fourth Street.  Does his girlfriend live in the area where he was killed?”

“Yeah.  Somewhere in that area his girlfriend lives but da ih sista ih mi deh.  Da ih sista ih mi live with, by ih sista.  So he always deh with ih sista, always.”

“Do you know if the police have made any kind of arrests or any headway in terms of investigating this murder?”

“Not as we know of.  We only know that dehn have di girlfriend still hold.”

C.I.B. personnel are continuing their investigation into the brazen homicide and contrary to reports elsewhere in the media no arrests have been made so far. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
