Said Musa says 9th takes away rights

Said Musa

The P.U.P. held a meeting at Independence Hall in Belize City in which it was decided that Fort George Area Representative Said Musa would appear as Leader of the Opposition for today’s House Meeting. But Musa did not receive a majority support from three of the elected parliamentarians and so today there was no Leader of the Opposition in the House. Mark Espat, Cordel Hyde and John Briceño, who did not support Musa, were all absent from today’s sitting. But the former prime minister sounded like the Leader of the Opposition in the House when he took PM Barrow to school on the purpose of the amendment and why he believes it takes away rights and freedoms from citizens.

Said Musa, Fort George Area Representative

“We should all note that the government has already taken over these public utilities even before these bills. The government already has majority ownership and control of B.T.L., B.E.L. and BWSL. What the bill seeks to do is amend the constitution to ensure that for all times, forever, the government in perpetuity will always have majority control and I believe that’s what the Prime Minister has emphasizing today. The question that must be asked is: Why is the government tampering with constitution to do this when they have not even settled compensation, which they will have to pay—whether that government or a future? Why is government doing this when their very first takeover of B.T.L. has been declared unlawful and invalid by Court of Appeal? And if they felt the court was wrong, the Court of Appeal—the highest Court in Belize, why did they not appeal the decision? Why instead did they use the force of the police and the army to take back control of B.T.L. in defiance of the judgment of the Court of Appeal? This I submit Mr. Speaker with yet another clear demonstration of this government’s arrogant abuse of power that they seem to believe that might make right. In fact that was not nationalization; it was expropriation of private property as the court found. In other words, in the view of the government it seems, the court can say what it wants, but it’s the Prime Minister and his supermajority in the house that runs things and can do whatsoever they want. To hell with the rule of law; that seems to be their attitude.

The ninth amendment Mr. Speaker is not only about nationalization, it’s about gutting the constitution of Belize, putting the supreme law of Belize in a state of total paralysis—incapable of rejecting any future change of the constitution; even if the change is a deliberate attempt to take away any of the fundamental rights and freedoms of the citizens of Belize.”

Personally I nuh believe anything Said Musa says. He has been proven to be a liar during his time as PM. I would be a very rich man if I was given $10 for everytime Said Musa told a lie. Hate him or love him, the point is he is the last person one should actually believe and trust in.

  3. Manuel Almendar says:

The man may have lied about a lot of things in the past but what he is stating here, common sense tell yuh is the reality of the situation. We the people allow this to happen so we should point finger on ourselves instead of being so quick to point at the past and present leaders. we are the ones who have and continue to support them. Belize done!!

  6. Mr. Concerned says:

thank you brother. We are the fools. little bribe, we ready to agree.

  7. Retired CEO says:

It is a rotten shame to see so many Belizeans buying into the lies of the current PM while calling the Hon Said Musa a liar with absolutely no evidence that he is a liar, the only evidence are the udp lies. Said Musa did more developmentally for Belize than any other PM. now you can call this a lie, go run tell it.

  8. hard woking Belizean says:

revolution & Mr. Concerned you hit the nail on the head! Belizeans have no pride & value in selling out their votes for a meager amount of $….Don’t they realize that the $50.00 or whatever they give them for their votes will go down the drain in a matter of minutes whilst the suffering and hardtimes last for 5 years and more!! Tsssk, tsssk…..that’s when one cannot see further than their nose point! Mr. Musa may have lied, stolen or whatever else he may have done but times were not as low & hard as now! Wake up & smell the stench not the coffee!!

  12. Sw@gville says:

In those sittings for the 9th amendment all they were doing is taking people’s names and writing yes or no whenever they gave there opinions .Personally i think that it was a reason for members of the UDP to go and show their suppot for their party.Which i believe has nothing to do with the ninth amendment.Just a bunch of un-ruley people making noise. It is hard when you have a bunch childish people running our country. Most people don’t even know what the 9th amendment is , not even some ministers. All they know is that they are UDP supporter and because the ministers says support the 9th amendment they will follow.I think we should have a sitting to ask each and every minister from the UDP what the 9th amendment is about.I bet some of them wouldn’t know what to say.My community hasn’t recieved not such as a load of sand to fix our terrible roads, not that one load of sand can help but just to show you how they are neglecting the people. They are supposed to be about the people but they are more about themselves, relatives and friends.I am sorry for my country and the young children growing up.They are growing up in a violent society and they are ones that get caught up in the cross fire.God bless BELIZE.
