Missing mariners safe and sound in Roatan
After being lost at sea for almost twelve hours, tonight two Belizeans reported missing on Monday are home safe. Around six-thirty yesterday morning, Kendra Schofield and captain Errol Jacobs left Long Caye at Glover’s Reef for Dangriga in a thirty-eight foot Colombian style skiff with twin two hundred horsepower outboards. But hard rain, rough seas and a malfunctioning compass made it impossible for Jacobs to figure out he was heading south and not west towards the Belizean mainland. After travelling for several hours, the duo realised something was terribly wrong and to conserve gas, they decided to use only one engine. When the weather finally cleared, they were shocked to see the mountains of Honduras on the horizon. A vessel from the Honduran coast guard eventually spotted them and escorted them to the island of Roatan where they were given food and water. Our sources indicate that they spent the night there and bright and early this morning were finally able to call home and tell loved ones their incredible story. We understand Jacobs and Schofield left Roatan around noon today after they had refuelled and obtained a new compass. The pair was reported missing on Monday afternoon by Schofield’s husband after they failed to show up at their Dangriga destination. A search was subsequently launched by the Belize Coast Guard, BATSUB, the Belize Port Authority, along with several private boats, but proved unsuccessful. The search party was about to leave shore again when they got the call that the sailors had been found.
