Stabbing victim knows assailant
There might have been no murder or shooting victims on the bloody streets of Belize City on Wednesday night, but there is still a victim who is clinging to life tonight. Thirty-one year old Leon Hinds was viciously stabbed three times in an area near 88 Shopping Center on Central American Boulevard. His sisters told News Five that even as he undergoes treatment at the KHMH, he has been trying to communicate with them, and his main message was the identity of the person who left him for dead.
Estelle Gabourel, Sister of Leon Hinds
“I came up here this morning after six and he was on life support. He had all these things hooked up to him. He was unresponsive; his eyes were taped down, it was just sad to see him like that. He had three stab wounds, to right lung, to the upper left part of neck and to the lower middle part of the chest. It punctured his lungs and it cut a main artery in his neck.”

“While he’s in bed, you tried to speak to him?”
“About after eleven, he was responsive. They took off the oxygen and stuff and he was responsive so I asked him to blink once for yes and twice for no. I asked him if he know who did this to him. He blinked once. There was witness—one of my aunts were there, his aunt was there. he blinked once for yes. I asked him if it was his girlfriend. He blinked twice, no. I asked him if it was someone related to her and he blinked once for yes and then he started to cry. And then I asked him if it was one of her uncles or brothers and he blinked twice for no. And then when I asked him if it was someone closed to her, the girlfriend, he just came out and said ih son. And then he started crying and he said at his best, ih try stop ahn, ih try stop ahn. And then he started to cry and got too excited and so we had to calm him down and when I came out I called the detective on the case, detective Melendez and I gave him the information. I haven’t heard from him so I really don’t know the status of the case is right now.”
Sonia Hinds Davis, Sister of Leon Hinds
“Well later this afternoon, we spoke to him. He was a little bit more responsive. He spoke to my mother and he said who stabbed him. He came out plain and said it was Martha’s son. Martha is his common law wife and her son stabbed him. Just a little while ago, two family members were here for her—she sent them here to see how he was doing. And they were saying that she’s not responsive. They are asking what went on, she doesn’t want to say what went on, she doesn’t have an explanation. At this point where we are at right now, my brother is critical, we cannot allow them to see him and right now the family has more questions than answers. Yes they are showing some concern, We do appreciate that, but at this point we would really want to speak to Martha. We just want to know what happened. The incident happened already but we just want to know what happened, what transpired to make her son almost take my bredda’s life.”
Garnetta Alarcon, Sister of Leon Hinds
“He didn’t deserve this because then what if he died? And we still can’t be sure of that because he is critical. But whenever he wakes up and we go and talk to him, the first thing he’s trying to say is Martha’s son, Martha’s son—that’s all he is trying to say.”
While a formal report was not made, police visited the KHMH to get a statement on Wednesday night’s incident.
