Jones gives back her Olympic medals

Story PictureDisgraced Olympic champion Marion Jones has returned the five medals she won at the Sydney games. According to international press reports, today Jones’ lawyer, Henry DePippo, confirmed that earlier today the sprinter “relinquished” the three gold and two bronze medals that she was awarded in 2000. The move comes five days after Jones admitted that she used banned performance enhancing drugs before, during, and after the Olympics. Following that statement, the International Olympic Committee indicated that it would strip Jones of the medals not only because she took the drugs, but also because she repeatedly lied to federal investigators about it. Jones has admitted to taking a drug called “The Clear” which would not show up in tests, but says that at the time her coach told her she was taking flaxseed oil. Following her court appearance on Friday, she apologised to her fans and announced she was retiring from track and field. Jones is expected to receive jail time when she is eventually sentenced.
