San Pedro resident missing; family concerned

Ervil McCauley

A San Pedro resident has been missing for over two weeks. Ervil McCauley, a father of two daughters, one seven months old and the other two years old, has not been seen since October fourteenth. McCauley, better known as Pecans, left home to go on a fishing trip with friends. One of his sisters, Wendy Castillo says that they fear the worst and they need to know for sure if they have lost their brother.

“Before he went missing, like three weeks, he came to visit my mom in Hattieville with his two children and his girlfriend—they all live in San Pedro. Usually when he comes most Saturday, my mom just suffered a major stroke in march so she is in a wheelchair and we take care of her, so most weekends we would go over and just visit her. It’s fourteen of us—nine brother and five girls. So that’s where most of our family gathering occurs to be with her on Saturdays and Sundays. So I saw him three weeks ago, spoke to him and after that I never heard anything. His girlfriend came in two weeks ago and as normal she come to visit my mom with the two kids. We asked of him and she said she hasn’t heard from him, but we didn’t take it as anything serious because according to her there are times when he would get into his little boat and go around the reef and go fishing with a group of friends in San Pedro. I don’t know his friends; we are close but not close to know his whereabouts and what he does. But now we believe that missing from October 14th, let us realize that something is wrong because he never just goes without calling his girlfriend. His two children are his life; he loves those two girls dearly. So we became concerned when she came last Thursday and said it’s been two weeks and she hasn’t heard from him. As a family we said this si serious—it’s not like him to just go and not to call her. For her they are always in touch. According to her, they went—him and some friends from San Pedro who normally go out on the boat—all the friends went out; two boats went out. All the other friends are here, but he didn’t return. And nobody is saying what happened. Rumor has it on the island that he is dead. For now we have reported it to the police last Thursday in San Pedro and then Friday in Belize City. To date, no search has been made. So we are just asking the authorities to at least do a search. As a family we need closure. If what we hear is true and he has been murdered then vengeance is God Jose, we are not a family that would create any enemy. We don’t know what caused whatever happened between him and his friends—according to the rumors; like I said I don’t know. Until the police do their investigations and pull in the friends and question them, I don’t want to speculate, but with Belize being so dangerous right now; usually when you hear rumors like this, if dah noh soh dah nearly soh. So for us, it’s just closure we want. We want them to do a search.  It’s gonna be three weeks now. So even if he has been murdered and he is dead, we don’t even have a body but at least we want to know and sleep in the night to know that he went and he’s in a better place and we can have closure among ourselves rather than thinking what could have happened. For me I don’t even want to know what happened at this point. I just want to know if he’s dead or alive and let us move on. Like I said whatever happened we will never know. A group of friends left the island, he never returned and everyday now, his sisters and brothers are left to wonder what happened to him.”

On San Pedro, Pecans friends are, as the expression goes, well known to the police.
