Rachel returns for annual art show

Story PictureMany local artists who have made their homes abroad regularly return to Belize to visit loved ones and find inspiration for their work. Rachel Heusner is one of those talented people and this week, her latest show hit the local art scene.

Rachel Heusner, Artist
“The everyday things, things that’s, you know, just so ordinary to us that we don’t really take it into consideration, and that’s what a painting does, it stops you and you say ‘oh, okay, that’s interesting.’”

That’s how Belizean-Trinidadian artist Rachel Heusner describes her latest exhibition, Pure Life.

Heusner hopes this show and the others sure to follow will inspire Belizeans to appreciate art.

Rachel Heusner
“Some people might look at it as a pretty picture for your wall but it encompasses everything about life, you know, the clothes you wear, the cars we drive. There’s a designer involved in all of that, and I wish that adults would get their children more involved, to see how important art is, that it’s not, you know, people always have this starving artist mentality. ‘Oh if you’re an artist that doesn’t sell and your children can’t go into it, but there’s so— I mean, there’s design, there’s T-shirt design, there’s advertising, there’s so much. But this is like the base of it, and if you could get an interest in that, then you know, you could build it up in your kids and even as adults, open your minds, come out, see the exhibition.”

The pieces are for sale and large prints of Heusner’s previous work are also available. Interested persons can visit the exhibition free of cost at the Belize City House of Culture. Reporting for News Five, I am Janelle Chanona.

Heusner left Belize today but the show will run until next week Friday. For more information about “Pure Life” including sale prices, please contact 227-2301 or 623-5344.
