Minister of Education defends HFLE curriculum

Since hosting a series of workshops on the teaching of Health and Family Education, QUADS, a department with the Ministry of Education as well as the U.S. Peace Corps, have come under fire from various organizations including Vision Inspired by the People for promoting what they consider to be the homosexual agenda.  Today, Minister of Education Patrick Faber said that the course is geared towards the teaching of life skills that are necessary for children to become productive citizens in their adulthood.

Patrick Faber, Minister of Education

“Mr. Speaker I wish to assure parents and the community that the HFLE Curriculum carries no hidden agenda.  In fact, the HFLE Curriculum seeks to address the fact that young people in the Caribbean, including Belize, are at risk due to many factors including violence, negative peer pressure, family challenges and health issues including early sexual activity and the risk of HIV/AIDS.  The HFLE Curriculum is a response to these many issues to help the schools not only to respond to them but also to ultimately ensure that all Belizeans acquire the knowledge, skills and attitude which is required for their own personal development and for full and active participation in the development of the nation.  The curriculum Mr. Speaker is based on the CARICOM Health and Family Life regional curriculum framework which sees HFLE as a comprehensive life skills based program which focuses on the whole resilient person in that it one: enhances the potential of young persons to become productive and contributing adults or citizens; two, promotes an understanding of the principles that underlie personal and social wellbeing; three, fosters the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes that are necessary for healthy family life; four, provides opportunities to demonstrate sound health-related knowledge attitudes and practices.”

Earlier this week VIP Chairman Robert Lopez called upon the Ministry of Education to recant all HFLE manuals currently being distributed in some primary schools by the Peace Corps.

Well said Mr. Minister. All you said is good but you failed to say how this HFLE Curriculum will achieve all that good that you ennumerated. I have a feeling that money is involved in this mixture just like the last time. Was it the UN ? or was it the OAS? that threatened to withhold donations if corporal punishment was not abolished in schools. Now, tell us which organization or foreign govt. would withhold donations unless HFLE is taught in our schools?. Mr. Minister, let me remind you THAT THE LOVE OF MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL. We want to be like the other nations of the world?. This nations are Godless and Corupted from inside and we will become like them if we are not more careful. Some three thousand years ago, a new emerging nation was given this sound counsel which we would do well to also heed: WHEN THOU TAKE POSSESSION OF THE LAND WHICH THE LORD THY GOD GIVETH THEE; DO NOT IMITATE THE ABOMINABLE CUSTOMS OF THE SURROUNDING NATIONS. Deuteronomy 18:9.

  3. Earl Grey says:

I can’t forget THAT PATRICK FABER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE UNTIMELY DEATH OF Mr. CHARLES GOODE.

  4. Ryan says:

I am all for HFLE, perhaps people should read about the real content instead of being misguided by what is assumed.
In my days there was no sexuality education, positive step for our educational system and there is no money involved.

  5. A Hopkins says:

Well, I for one say “well done Minister” for not giving in to the hysteria currently around in the nation. If ignorance is bliss, there are many extremely blissful people in the country.

I hope di patrick secured funds too for disaster relief and Aids problems, as when dis unibam nasty ting is passed here in belize, and yes it will pass, di Lord’s protection will be removed from our country. All a dem hurricanes dat just turned away from us will steer straight to us and cause misery. It wont be that God is tit for tat with us. It will be that His protective arms will be withdrawn from over us because we choose to go the evil way. Just look on all the countries that made this evil a law. Study what all disasters they are going through. Sinning against God brings about consequences. See God burnt up Sodom and Gomorrah for di same thing. Homosexualism and lesbianism. We are seeing the same thing being spread all over the world like fire. O we have to accept them as they are. Its going against their human rights. Down with this human rights foolishness. Why you think the kids are so out of hand now a days? Human rights. Look on di ones who commit murder. They got more human rights than the victims. They walk scott free. Make me feel that dis human rights crazyness have a hidden agenda because when it should kick in to serve for human rights it leave one out in di cold. Not adding up. So patrick i hope you are around to see what u will be causing on our country in di future. Maybe we should come up with a law to hold u responsible bredda.

    Read Romans chapter 1

  8. CEO says:

Homosexuality is a fact of life and has been around as long as there has been mankind. So if we stick our heads in the sand and pretend it does not exist we leave our children unable to identify the necessary signs to protect themselves against unwanted advances. They need to be educated so they would be able to speak of these facts of life in an intellegen manner unlike many of the above comments that are only ignorance based.

Homosexuality is spoken of in the Bible so I know it has been around for some time now. By the way my fellow Belizeans; many of the great musical composers and philosophers that we try to get our children to emulate were homosexuals!

Good job Mr Faber! A good education is knowledge based and does not only expose one to the things he/she believes in but also to things they do not necessarily care for or take an active part in.

  9. Renu says:

I do not believe homosexuality can be “taught”. Is there actual research to back that claim?
