Albert boys rule Over 35 Basketball

Story PictureJames Adderley, Reporting
Good evening, I’m James Adderley with this fresh dish of Sport’s Monday. So, we take you out to the City Centre Friday night, where the Albert Team hopes to complete the sweep against Old Technical Boys for the 2007 Over 35 Basketball Title of Belize City. And it’s Travis Santos leading the charge for the Technical Boys who spurt to a quick 5 point lead in the opening moments of the first quarter. The Technical Boys continue to look good when Brian Kelly strikes for 2 of his 12 game points right here. Albert responds with this 3 pointer from Mark Espat as the defending champion finally gets going. And then last year’s M.V.P. and leading scorer, Vince “The Postman” Estrada, strike for 3 from the opposite side of the court. In fact, it’s back to back three for the Postman, when he strikes again from the top of the key. At the end of the first quarter, Team Albert has grabbed a 23-17 lead. In the second quarter, Albert would widen the gap especially with turnovers like this one that allows Victor “Pa Vic” McKenzie to get the freebie. Travis Santos who would lead his team with 21 points keeps them going with this 3 pointer. At the other end Pa Vic find Charlie “Dunk” Armstrong, who banks in 2 of his 11 game points on this play. At the half, Albert is up 43-29. In the meantime, second half finds Albert on cruise control as Mark Espat hits off the Post Estrada miss. How many times have you seen this hook-up people? Angus “Wala” Cherrington grabs the rebound, finds Vince Estrada down court, who would finish with the game high of 25 points. Team Albert goes on to post the 75-57 big W to sweep the two game series, winning its second Maxi-Basketball Title without losing a game in fifteen appearances over two years. Hey guys, congratulations certainly are in order.

In the battle for third place in this basket ball league, M&M’s Christian Ambassadors prevailed with a 65-54 big W over B.W.S. Bulls. Checking in on the interoffice basketball scene, Home Protector/Brodies opened a 2 game championship series Friday night at the City Centre against Telemedia for this years’ interoffice title. But it’s Marvin Castillo who gets Telemedia going, striking for 2 of his 12 game points. For Home Protector/Brodies, Kevin Flowers is the big man tonight, striking for 3 right here. Flowers does it again on the very next possession. He would record the game high of 24 points. At the half, we’re tied at 24 points a piece. We fast forward to money time in the fourth quarter, down by 2, this is the play that ties the ballgame for Telemedia. Home Protector/Brodies now hurries to grab the W in regulation time people. Flowers coughs up the pill. Mervin Castillo receives the long pass and he delivers the winning bucket with emphasis as Telemedia wins game one 56-54. In the meanting, Telemedia completed this sweep with a 71-65 big W on Sunday at the City Centre, to sweep this series and take the 2007 interoffice title. Ronald Alacon led the league in scoring with 26 points. Edward Thompson, he took M.V.P. honour. Bernard Aguet was voted best coach; while Devon Lozano led the playoffs in scoring with a 19 point average.

Turning to the cycling scene, Elston Coleman of Sea Ray won Saturday’s 62 mile race presented on the Western Highway by the Belize Cycling Association, in a time of 2 hours 43 minutes and 45 seconds. He beat out Byron Pope of Benny’s Megabytes and Darnell Barrow who finished second and third in that particular order. On the Billiard scene, kudos are in order for the Advanced Advertising of Belize City who knocked off G.I. Unit of Corozal to take the National Guiness 9 Ball Tournament, featuring Angel Vargas, Larry Lisby, Ramon Reed, Michael Estefan Sr., Ajay Bajaj, Rashid Balani and Lionel Pinelo. Third base of Orange Walk beat challengers of Punta Gorda for third place. Adibaldo Monima, he emerged as the most valuable player of this particular billiard tournament. We say congratulations to one and all.

In football news, action over the weekend in the Lake I Community Juvenile Football saw Youth for the Future beat Third World 2 zip. While Baka Town Berger got past Dubu 2-1.

In softball news, the decisive match-up between Roaring Creek Grace Kennedy and the Esperenza Wolverines for the Cayo Softball Title unfolded yesterday inside Camalote, with Esperanza giving it’s portion off this fast ball and allows the runner from third to score. In the bottom of the inning, Karet Thompson gives up this single to Karlee Bradley, who brings in Magalee Ho from third base. It’s pitcher against pitcher when Kenreen Gillett helps her cause with this single that allows Karlee Bradley to score all the way from second. In the next inning, this bud by Magalee Ho fills the bases against Karet Thomspon. The next batter, Tonya Davis, smacks this pitch to second base, but the throw home is errored and another run comes in. And we must give the Esperenza defence credit for turning this double play which shuts down that particular rally. However, Kenreen Gillett makes the next inning against the Wolverines a 1-2-3 inning, when this runner is thrown out at first base. We’re in the fourth inning with the bases loaded when Thompson walks Belvia Gillett to give up yet another run. This forces Esperenza to change pitcher, which puts Indira Spain on the mound, and she gets her team out of this jam. In the fifth though, Spain gets tagged by Kenreen Gillett to bring in another run. Folks, this shot by Belvia Gillett should have been caught by the outfield, instead 2 more runs come in as Roaring Creek Grace Kennedy post the 10-3 victory to claim this year’s Cayo Softball title and we say congratulations.

That’s our show for today, we certainly invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah overall, I’m James Adderley.
