RECONDEV employee jacked of $21,000

A Belmopan thief probably knew when he went after workers of the Reconstruction Development Corporation (RECONDEV), he would net a sizeable amount of cash.  On Wednesday evening around four-thirty that robber made off with a moneybag containing cash and cheques amounting to twenty-one thousand five hundred dollars. Twenty-two year old Roaring Creek resident, Curlene Arthurs, a cashier at RECONDEV, told police that she was at the First Caribbean Bank to make a daily deposit. Arthurs said that whilst she was conducting the transaction at the deposit box, a man pointed a gun at her.  Fearing for her life, Arthurs told police that she stopped what she was doing and then the man grabbed the bag containing the money and ran away. News Five spoke with Peter August of Recondev, who told us that the cashier makes deposits at the same time on a regular basis. August said that that while they believe that the robber must have been monitoring their movements when leaving the office, he didn’t know that bag contained mostly cheques. At the time of the incident, two other co-workers who were inside the company vehicle accompanied Arthurs on the trip to the bank. While the police report doesn’t mention any arrests, News Five understands that two persons have been detained. The bag contained six thousand dollars in cash and the balance in cheques.

Could this be a staged act?

  2. Charlie Price says:

Why would TWO CO-WORKERS be sitting in the car when a third is making a deposit???
DON’T THEY KNOW WHAT THE CRIMINAL CLIMATENIS IN BELIZE???
Three of them should have been standing at the deposit box..TWO AS SECURITY!!! The robber would think twice.

(shaking my head but am not surprised) ….what you must understand is that those other 2 people were not there for securoty but were just along for the ride, probably on the way home ….there are businesses in Belmopan who STILL don’t take adequate security measures to prevent this sort of thing from happening. In fact, It wasn’t until a few years ago that places like Social Security, DFC have had armed security picking up and depositing their daily cash take. The practice had previously been, that at the end of the day, the cashier WALKs to the nearby bank and makes the night deposit!! …they have since changed this practice but many places in Belmopan such as Recondev, City Council, some local stores and business etc etc still do so, even in todays criminal climate!! …..it is inevitable that those particular places would eventually come under attack by the criminals!!

Belmopaneze for your info. the Belmopan City Council do have a Police officer every day when making the daily deposit for some years now; its only Recondev that does not practice.
