“Ann in Kenya” showcases richness of Africa

Story PictureThe photo exhibition is a collection of pictures taken by well known media personality Ann Marie Williams on her recent trip to Nairobi, Kenya, where she was a delegate to the World Council of the Young Women’s Christian Association. The display is dedicated to the Y.W.C.A. of Belize.

Ann Marie Williams, Journalist
“if anything these pictures do, they tend to shatter the myth and show you an Africa that use to be and how—particularly in Nairobi, where the conference was held—today, it is one of the largest big cities and most modern in Africa.”

“To see women come together to share information on women’s leadership and HIV/AIDS. It shows us that that which unites us far out weighs that which divides us and we usually look at our differences rather than all the shared commonalities we have.”

“Although it’s grandiose, it has a lot of similarities of our colonial past because it was one of the countries, like ours, which was colonized by the British. The people are similar to our black people but they have a rich amalgam of different cultures still in tact: their music, their dance, their art and craft. A lot of the women, you will see in the exhibition, still wear their typical dress and headdresses or their ‘mandulis’ and it shows that even though there is American influence all over, somehow they keep what is typically African and what is typically Kenyan.”

The one month exhibition hosted at the Bliss coincides with the Free Again display at the House of Culture. Following the shows in Belize City both exhibitions will travel to Dangriga, Orange Walk and Benque Viejo.
