Muscles flex at bodybuilding competition

Story PictureGood evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday. The 2009 B.P.F.L. Football Season kicked off yesterday with three big matches nationwide. Here in Belize City at the M.C.C. Grounds, F.C. Belize opened against a San Pedro team intent on establishing itself as a legitimate title contender this time around. However, it is the home team looking to strike early when Leon Cadle attacks off the left wing only to be thwarted by the San Pedro defense. F.C. Belize continues to press the issue as Jeromy James fires this left foot forcing Alden August to make a difficult save. There’s no doubt that F.C. Belize is the protagonist in this one when Byron Usher launches this left foot that brings out the best in goalkeeper August of San Pedro. At the other end San Pedro finally gets some offense going when Daniel Caliz fires from point-blank range on a chance he should have done better with. In the meantime, this volley by the veteran Orlando Pinelo just fades outside the goal on what looks like a good attempt. F.C. then responds off this corner kick that Jeromy James should have buries. Instead the ball veers wife. At the half the ballgame remains scoreless. Immediately into second half, the islanders get first bid to score on this press but fail to hit the target. Folks, we’re fifty-six minutes into the standoff when Byron Usher powers this right foot past August to give F.C. Belize a 1-zip lead. F.C. Belize wants more so Brian Martinez, fresh off the bench, looks for Harrison Tasher but August intervenes successfully. It’s Martinez again attacking off the left side and this time he does find Sergio Gilharry, also fresh off the bench, and he finishes the easy play for the 2-zip F.C. lead. Meanwhile, in the closing moments of the ballgame, Sergio Gilharry beats the keeper and then misses an empty goal for no good reason at all. Still F.C. posts the 2-zip big W in its opener against San Pedro.

In other results from opening day in the B.P.F.L., defending champion Nizhee Corozal blanked the B.D.F. 1-zip, while Hankook Verdes certainly humiliated Wagiya 9-nothing.

In other football news, week four in the Belize Bank Super League saw Paradise Freedom Fighters edging Texmar United 1-zip. Hattieville F.C. handled San Pedro Islanders 3-2, San Felipe Barcelona and Placencia Assassin battled to a scoreless draw, Kraal Road F.C. got over Cayo United 2-1 and Valley Renaissance crushed Santa Elena Synergy 4-1. On this week’s schedule, this Sunday Kraal Road will host San Felipe at the M.C.C. Grounds, Cayo South will play San Pedro at Belmopan, Valley Renaissance gets a visit from Texmar United, Santa Elena Synergy will be at home against Placencia Assassin and Hattieville F.C. plays host to Paradise Freedom Fighters.

In softball news, Leslie Rogers’ Lady Rebels took twelve years before wining the National Ladies Softball title with a fine performance in the six team tournament over the weekend at Rogers Stadium. They beat defending champions B.T.L. 5-2 and then in the money game walloped Camalote 13-3 and we say heartfelt congratulations.

On the cricket scene, powered by twenty-three runs from Alburn River, Home Protector Sunrise of Lords Bank won Saturday’s pivotal game three at Burrell Boom, 84-61 over Brilliant of Crooked Tree to claim the 2009 Harrison Parks Trophy as presented by the Belize District Cricket Association and we say good show. In the meantime, stay tuned for the Champion of Champions series when Lords Bank will face the champion of the Belize National Cricket Association for bragging rights so stay tuned.

Now let’s head to the Bliss Institute where Friday night the Belize Body Building Federation presented the annual Mr. Belize show. And boy do we have some world class athletes competing for the biggest title of all. Finishing third in his first appearance for the Mr. Belize Title is none other than Regio Vellos and he’s one to watch. Edwin Ramirez might be smiling on the outside but the former champ cannot be happy with his second place finish. Again he is beaten by the man called Deon Danderson, who successfully defends his title and we say congrats to Mr. Belize 2009. But we must give kudos’ to all six athletes who made the competition a world class affair this year. Meanwhile, Regio Vellos took the Junior B title, Giovanni Gomez had to settle for second, while Mike Singh rounds out the top three in this class. Give it up again for Regio Vellos who also won the Junior A classification and he totalled two first and a third Friday night. Ellsworth Tillett took home second prize in this class and Don Ortiz placed third.

Meanwhile, the bikini challenge was something else. And nuff respect to Shelina Vernon, who walked away with top honours. Kim Simpliss hid her disappointment when she settled for second. Joyce Williams rounds out the top three. Folks there’s something about the female body figure even that always catches ones attention. Leslie Miranda picks up the third place prize according to the judge. Kayla Myvette is the runner-up in 2009, while the winner and deservingly so, is Faith Ferguson. Today we’re convinced the human body is a work of art.

Hey folks, that’s our show for today. We invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
