Cop outsmarted by medical technician and caught in extortion attempt
A sting operation on Thursday has resulted in charges being brought against a police officer. Twenty-eight year old Police Constable Amir Moh, a resident of San Jose Palmar in Orange Walk, was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of Extortion. According to forty-eight year old Alexander Tate, the officer demanded money from him at a checkpoint near mile eight on the Northern Highway for an uninsured vehicle. Tate left and later returned with a stack of marked bills, with which he paid Moh. According to Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Police, Raphael Martinez, there is a zero tolerance policy for the unlawful conduct of officers.
Raphael Martinez, PR, Ministry of Police
“Yesterday morning at approximately 10:30, one Mister Alexander Tate upon reaching the checkpoint at mile 8 just adjacent to Manatee Bar, he was stopped by one of our police officers who was later identified as 1124 P.C. Amir Moh. Upon looking at the vehicle that Mister Tate was driving in, a silver Tercel car, he told Mister Tate that because you don’t have insurance, you would need to pay me some money. Apparently, Mister Tate returned later on that day, marked his bills and went to the Ladyville police station where he reported the incident. Police visited the checkpoint and found P.C. Amir Moh at that location where upon searching his person, found the said amount of money—marked currency on him. He has been arrested and charged with extortion. The message that we want to send to the general public is that during the course of our duty—try to work along with the community—we are trying to deliver the best service that we can provide. However, we will not tolerate improprieties by any of our police officers and they will be charged criminally if found guilty of such acts. So if you have any information of our police officers acting unprofessionally or any improprieties being done by police officers, kindly report them to the nearest police station.”
In court today, Moh, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann Marie Smith. Bail was offered in the sum of one thousand dollars, which he met by four o’clock this afternoon. His next court appearance is scheduled for February twenty-third.
Both should have their day in court. Extortion for the cop and impound that v ehicle for not being insured and charged for driving it.
yes things like that happen but how many police officers have done so. well from what is the story everyone has his version but no one will say what really happen. but from what really took place has to be faced in court. where persons like this individual that got caught will pay for the pety wrong he did!!! of course because of a good individual reporting it! but how many police offers do such more criminal stuffs and come out free!!!! but the man who acused him of such thing begged the officer not criminally charg him of not having an insurance at time caught and the humble officer gave him a pass. the man being afraid returned and offered Pc. MOh a sum of money and told him to please take it. then the man when to report the officer. my fellow people cases do happen! but there are always a time when some one will be in this type of need but as god touches one Heart ones try’s to help. anyone would have taken the mone if such was the case! and this type of coruption is seen every where with immigration officers, police patrols, chek points etc. people paying high ranking officers a good amount of money. and a case like this should be taken into consideration. and charge the individual who reported such thing of not having a insurance!!!
Is he a sample of where our security is??? What a dumb fellow!!!
Funny how the PD is claiming to be cleaning its ranks by charging petty things like this…How about charging the GSU for shooting up that house by Belmopan?
remember police vote.
Police vote yes; but they swore to serve and protect us not steal, deal drugs and extort!
I would have liked to see more of this happening way before electiion talk started! Remove all the rogue cops and bring back respect and honor to the occupation!
Islander, you are so right. Im sure they trying to frustrate the man so ih drop the case but if I were him, I would pursue it to the highest possible.
It was a clear example with envy and political victimization. Judgement day coming….tables WILL turn.
