Taiwan and UB sign bilateral agreement

The Republic of China and Taiwan and the University of Belize signed a “Letter of Intent on the Designation of Taiwan Academy Contact Points and Bilateral Cooperation”.  Simply put, it means that Taiwan will provide more higher-education opportunities for students and promote the exchange of culture with Belize. U.B. will be disseminating the information on the Taiwan Scholarships and Fellowships program and will facilitate the exchange of relevant publications.  Signing the letter were President of UB, Dr. Cary Fraser and Taiwanese Ambassador, David Wu. “Through this Embassy we have given one hundred and eighty-five scholarships to the Belizean Students. Half of them have completed their studies and come back to this country and even after they come back; we are still very concerned about their study in Taiwan and the result of their study. We actually have a very strong alumni society organized by students coming back from Taiwan after their studies. In the past we have noticed in our three scholarships or fellowships provided by Taiwan Government, that only the students make sue of the student scholarship but in the future we hope that University of Belize will also have the access to that fellowship that is for the faculty.”

“For Belizean Students, there will be opportunities to study Mandarin and also opportunity to purse early graduate programs, Masters Programs in Taiwan in a variety of fields. The University is committed to expanding its educational access and if we can get such educational access through foreign or international support like this, it is something that we would encourage all students to do. It is an important way of acquiring skills but it is also an important part of the University to acquire international exposure because Belize increasingly needs more skilled people but also people to who are able to operate at an international level, in order to advance the society’s interest.”

Minister of Education, Patrick Faber represented the government to witness the signing.
