Charged for female lured to prostitution

Yolanda Garcia

A second conviction for human trafficking was secured today on the heels of the conviction of fifty-four year old Santa Elena resident, Narcisa Orellana, who was the first to be found guilty and sentenced to eighteen months imprisonment.  Today, Honduran national, Yolanda Garcia, who is a naturalized Belizean, was found guilty of the offence of trafficking in persons. A seventeen year old minor of the Cayo area accused Garcia of instructing her to engage in sexual activity with patrons while she worked at a Serendita Bar which Garcia owns. The victim testified en camera that she had just left high school when she went to work for Garcia and did not want to engage in sexual favors. Garcia who was represented by attorney Simeon Sampson denied the allegations made by the seventeen year old. In mitigation this morning, Sampson pleaded to Chief Magistrate, Ann Marie Smith, to impose a lenient sentence but Garcia was given a custodial sentence of twelve months. Garcia is a mother of three.

I am happy see these people being jailed but I am afraid they are small fry. Strangely, it is two women convicted of human trafficking in Belize? Give me a break, are we just trying to make it look like we are doing something about this problem. If so go get Mr BIG, and stop trying to pull the wool over our eyes. I would not classify Yolanda’s case as human trafficking but more like straight up prostitution.

On another note, we cannot naturalise people and then refer to their original nationality (Honduran), in my view she is now Belizean, is she not? Having said that though, I would like to see a policy where at the end of her time in prison her naturalisation is revoked and she’s deported. We have to start doing this to deter other from thinking they can misbehave in their adopted homeland (Belize). We have our own born and raised criminals that we would like to be able to ship off somewhere else.

Apparently working working at a bar equals human trafficking. Beware brothel owners, there’s a new charge for prostitution…LOL

You could see that this Hondurenean or (new )Belizean was or maybe still a prostitute.I agree that she should be send back home to Honduras.why they dont do the same here in Corozal they have under age prostitutes with the name of waitress only because the owners of the whore joints pay off the police or imigration. For example C &B? MIRAMONTES? PASADINA? And the list goes and and and.The girl that went or goes to work there have an idea of what they do there.with that name?any stupid person will know that! Maybe the girl didnt graduate from school like she says. For 17 she is very supid or smart if shes sleeping with a big fish in the police to (help her).
