Sir George Brown, former Chief Justice, dead at 65

Story PictureSir George Brown, the second Belizean to hold the post of Chief Justice, has died. The sixty-five year old passed away this morning at his Belize City home following a seizure. Sir George began his legal career as a lay magistrate. Following studies at the Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica he was appointed a crown counsel in the D.P.P.’s office and later served as Solicitor General. Next came an appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court, followed in 1991 by his elevation to Chief Justice, where he served until his retirement in 1998. Sir George was an enthusiastic sailor and stalwart of the annual Baron Bliss Regatta and was actively involved in the promotion of sports, particularly football, as a character builder for youth. Sir George is survived by his wife, Lady Magdalene Brown, and four children. He will be buried next Thursday, August second, following services at two o’clock at Ephesus Adventist Church on Wilson Street. Sir George Brown: dead at sixty-five.
