Schakron: Belizean, Guatemalan or American?

Yolanda Schakron

But the P.U.P. Lake I candidate, Yolanda Schakron, gave a fiery statement on her citizenship status. Schakron, holds a US passport, but was born in Guatemala. At a press conference at Independence Hall this afternoon where the party’s United Women’s Group launched its Women’s Agenda 2012, Schakron told the media that she is as Belizean as it gets before going on to call out P.M. Barrow for his U.D.P. slate which she claims also includes candidates with dual citizenship.

Yolanda Schakron, P.U.P. Standard Bearer, Lake-I

“I have absolutely no problem in giving up my U.S. citizenship!  I, Yolanda Schakron, tell you the media and the Belizean people that I am as Belizean as rice and beans.  I want the people out there, the people of Lake-I to know that Yolanda will not be moved.  She will stand strong! Ah wahn send this message to Dean Barrow.  Yo liad, yo lie this mawnin pan TV because many ah your people like Penner, who is a member of the House of Representatives, has a Canadian passport.  I want the Belizean people to know.  I want the Belizean people to know [that] at the age of fifteen I got my papers through my parents who were residents of the United States at that time and I am a Belizean and I will continue to fight for the people of Belize.  Why is it that the United Democratic Party always have a problem with the women of this country?”

While we don’t know if and when Schakron will indeed renounce her US citizenship, according to the constitution, section fifty-eight (one), “no person shall be qualified to be elected as a member of the House of Representatives who is, by virtue of his own act, under any acknowledgement of allegiance, obedience or adherence to a foreign power of State.”

the comedy never ends-even if she wins-it will be challenged so she is a loser either way-another anthony.

  2. Eye In The Sky says:

I see nothing wrong with dual citizenship of a candidate or member of the House of Representative. It makes the person stronger with more options of running a country.
What should be enforced is that the persons Be Born In Belize if they want to be a minister of government. Who cares what other passport they have.

  3. Storm says:

I personally support changing the law to let dual citizens hold office, except PM. But until the law is changed, follow it.

    Stupid..Stupid…Stupid…

    Who cares??????

  6. Louisville,Ky says:

This woman seems to have no class whatsoever. How did it get from her status with dual citizenship to her gender? If you are so Belizean and want to serve your people, why are you so ruffled after being exposed?
If you are truely Belizean, then you should know that we mind other people’s business and aspiring for political office puts you even more so under the microscope, maddam.
If you can’t take this little heat, then you sure don’t belong in the kitchen.

  7. Janus says:

My advice to Ms. Schakron is this: Nuh worry bout the Penner rumour. Just come clean and worry about yourself!!! This is about you and not about me, him, her or them. You are not doing yourself any good by trying to deflect the controversy instead of coming clean.

  8. Caught fish says:

With 1250000+ Belizeans living in the US, most legally and many are duals; the real question is she crooked and incompetent?

  9. Josephino Estroberto Pesomedio says:

Penner was born in Costa Rica, do some homework Yoly, but drop it to them.

  10. t says:

Really she should renounce if she wants to be elected. Gather yourself professionally Yolanda and don’t behave like you want to fight with the P.M.

  11. aldo says:

If she is willing to give up her us citizenship then let her give it up. No need for her to bawl loudly about it since it certainly looks as if it pains her a lot . It is noone’s fault she is a us citizen but she is and the law is the law .

  12. Charlie says:

…AT LEAST SHE DID NOT GET HER BELIZE CITIZENSHIP OVERNIGHT WITHOUT A PROPER VETTING PROCESS, AND CERTAINLY THE IMMIGRATION OFFICERS DID NOT HAVE TO GO TO HER HOUSE TO GIVE HER THE PASSPORT!!! Go de strong Yolanda!! Go de strong!!! And the anser is: No the UDP don’t have a problem with Women…They have a problem with most Belizeans!!

  13. Eye In The Sky says:

Not Born In Belize you should not have the opportunity to run Belize as a minister.
Born in Belize and have dual citizenship . . who cares . . you should still be allowed to be a minister of government but Never Prime Minister.

    Just my 2 cents.

Am not interested in her citizenship status, it has no bearing….as a resident of Lake Independence i want to know if she has what it takes to bring change to the area. So far she’s looking good.
