Unemployed man now an entrepreneur

Unemployment is hovering at twenty-three point five percent; that puts a large number of bread winners out of the work force. Meet Bryant Peters, who has discovered that there are opportunities if you can foster an entrepreneurial spirit. Along with a group of other jobless persons, he has started a business. News Five’s Jose Sanchez reports.

Job cuts are one sign of a struggling economy. But a group of unemployed men are using their skills to forge their own. In less than a month of unemployment, Bryant Peters has become an entrepreneur.

Bryant Peters, Dial Belize Dispatching and Repair

Bryant Peters

“About two to three weeks ago, I became unemployed and I sat with my wife and tried to decide what we could do. And I said well I know a lot about parts and we will go from them. I have my cycle so I said we can do courier service as well.  So by talking over with my wife, I knew a couple other technicians—about four or five of them—that came along with me and said that they were willing to support me as I go along into this venture. So what I decided to do is create a dispatching and repair center. We basically go to the Central Prison once a week to deposit money—if you have money to deposit. We do the necessary run around just like the regular messenger that you may have. And the repairing part of it is to basically push the idea of repairs and parts at one location. So we basically repair treadmills, AC units, split units, computers, small appliances, blenders, microwaves—whatever can shut down within your home, business place, we have a replace it or fix it.”

So Peters has created a home office for the group at number 15 Curassow Street.

Jose Sanchez

“In the past 3 weeks you are unemployed and you managed to put together a home office. Some people would find it very hard to say you had a lot of courage to do this.”

Bryant Peters

“Well it is. It has been trials and tribulations. I basically had to scrape the last of what we had and put together the finances to do it. If you look at it, it is not something grand, but it is something that you can call a place of business. And it has been very difficult to find another job, but I said instead of going and begging for job, I can create my own job because I know something and I can move from there. So that is the general reason why we decided to go ahead and create the business.”

Jose Sanchez

“And a main part of what you basically have in terms of your asset base or your capital is actually the mind. What are the qualifications and skills of other people who are in this venture with you?”

Bryant Peters

“They are actually senior technicians. They have minimum of seven to eight years in the field of repairs. They are very good guys. They once worked for prominent businesses here in Belize and they themselves; some of them are unemployed. One of them comes all the way from Succotz in Benque to repair here in Belize City. So at the end of the day, these guys have extreme skills and the accessibility of getting the repairs done here in Belize City is very good. We’re looking forward to working throughout Belize District. So as long as we can get the jobs out there, we can send out a guy to get the job done.”

Really Rod…..like seriously?????? Here we have young men doing something positive with their lives, becoming their own bosses & creating employment for others, you had to come with the “black eye” to spoil everything.

This is a good story of someone not robbing and shootging. and beign sorry for himself. this is a story of courage. and sum dumb…lsjkdfa is putting it into politics. the youth never said anything about betgging PUP or UDP. he is saying he is using his mind, his skills. and looking for honest opportunity.

  5. eric says:

I agree with deedee, Rod you are a moron and the reason why we get the shaft every 5 years from both sides. If more Belizeans would start to think like deedee and Mr. Peters these foolish politicians on both sides would not consider themselves rulers instead of representatives of the people. We would never get anywhere as a country and a people because fools like Rod seem to keep replicating themselves into blue or red mindless leeches suckling on the vile blood of whatever politician that they prostitute themselves to. My fellow Belizeans what I hope you take from this story is inspiration to get off your lazy government reliant a$$e$$ and do something for yourselves because when a politician grants you a favor it’s like selling your souls to the devil.

  6. Chami-Ka says:

  9. citizen #2 says:

I knew all along that this Rod person was a “PUP” the way he talks. Instead of both parties get togather and run the country they use the divide and conquer, instead of united we stand philosophy, that way they can hold the citizens hostage, and keep using the “Da noh weh yuh know, but Da who yuh know idea. The same way Dem run Belize for centuries so, this behavior will never change, and this Rod is right in with the “PUP” when “UDP won his gravey train was cut short.

  10. belizeanpride says:
