Bulldogs and Tigersharks will meet in hoop finals
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and here’s another dish of Sports Monday.
Lester Cadle and the Orange Walk Eagles found themselves facing the golf course if the could not muster a win Saturday night against the San Pedro Tigersharks who took Game I of the semi-final semi-pro basketball playoffs by a 96 – 86 score.
This pressure finds the Eagles going to A.C. Augustine for the quick start and he complies with a big three in the opening moments.
However, Greg Rudon has plans of his own as he responds with the left hand off the glass. He would strike for a whopping 22 points.
The momentum swings more in favour of the San Pedro Tigersharks when Keith Acosta fights for his own missed shot to sink the put back and force the foul. At the end of the first quarter the visitors lead by seven.
In the second quarter, Lester Cadle comes alive, he stops, pops and begins to feel it.
In traffic Cadle hangs tough, collects the rebound, sinks the bucket and attracts the foul, would miss the gimme but would finish with the game high 32 points and an impressive 9 boards.
Of course Damian Staples is not going to sit back and take it so he goes glass, gets two, gets fouled which adds up to three points and his way to a double-double of 24 points and 12 boards.
Still when you’re hot you’re hot and indeed Lester Cadle is sizzling hot as he strikes for three more.
At the opposite end its A.C. Augustine’s turn to shine as he drops this tough shot. The veteran would finish with an eye catching double-double of 18 points and 15 boards. Nevertheless, at intermission the San Pedro Tigersharks still lead by seven.
Folks in the third quarter, the Tigersharks step on the gas. Kevin Siroki finds Greg Rudon unattended and he makes O.W. pay.
Acosta deals to Damian Staples as he powers in for two.
And then here comes Keith Acosta himself as he gets off two of his 11 points to go along with 6 assists and 9 boards. At the end of the third quarter the San Pedro team leads O.W. 65 – 47.
In the fourth quarter it’s just a matter of cruising to the tape for the visitors as Lloyd Leslie banks two off the glass.
Damian Staples continues with the hot hand as the San Pedro Tigersharks go on to post the big W in an 83 to 73 final score to sweep the semi-final series in two straight outings.
San Pedro now goes on to face the Belize Bank Bulldogs or the 2007 Semi-pro Basketball Tournament.
Turning to the softball scene, we caught up with yesterday’s match in the Belize Rural Softball Competition as Maskall Roaring Lions faced Flowers Bank Tigersharks at Lord’s Bank.
We’re in the top of the first with Danika Garnett on the mound for the Roaring Lions holding a runner on when Tricia Milligan comes up with this single to bring home Shana Robinson.
Shana Robinson is out at first but she nevertheless brings the runner from third home.
Give the rbi to Zalah Frazier when Eleanor Timmons comes up with the errant throw to fist as the Flowers Bank team jumps to a 3-zip lead in the top of the first.
Diane Rhaburn is on the mound for the Tigersharks in the bottom of the first when poor defence on this swing from Arlette Dawson at right filed brings home the first run for Maskall.
With two on, Shawn Usher tags Diane Rhaburn for this single that brings Garnett home and at the end of one we have a 3 – 3 tie.
The Flowers Bank team hangs tough as Shana Robinson tags Garnett for this in the park homerun that highlights her speed.
But the Maskall Roaring Lions come right back – Danika Garnett moves the runner at first with this hit.
Raven Bennett then beings home another run with this swipe that somehow reaches the outfield.
The Maskall team goes on to post the 13 – 10 win giving the victory to Danika Garnett. We say congratulations.
