Suspect arrested in fatal stabbing in Independence

A vicious and fatal stabbing has resulted in the arrest of a resident of Independence village. According to police, just after midnight on Sunday, authorities were informed that there was a man with a bad cut to his stomach lying on the street in front of the Bang Chinese Restaurant. When the cops showed up, they found twenty-four year old Deon Gordon on the ground with a portion of his intestine protruding from his abdomen. The badly bleeding man was rushed to the village polyclinic and later transferred to the Southern Regional Hospital in Dangriga. Despite his critical condition, Gordon was able to tell investigators that he was on his way home when two men attacked him on Flamboyant Avenue. Police say Gordon identified his assailants as Martin Leslie and Basil Saunders and further alleged that it was Saunders who stabbed him. Hours after giving his statement to investigators, Gordon succumbed to his injuries. Police have since arrested thirty-eight year old Basil Saunders of Blue Bird Street and charged him with murder.
