City Hall Labour Day cleanup of streets

Phillip Singh

It’s Labour Day on Tuesday and it means that it will be a day of rest for the working class; but the City Council is asking for your time to help them clean up the old capital. An initiative called ‘Labour for Belize’ seeks to get as many hands out on tomorrow to collect the garbage and trash that is lying around the city. Phillip Singh, the Community Outreach Officer says that youth groups and citizens are welcome to join in the cleanup campaign:

Phillip Singh, Community Outreach Officer, Belize City Council

“Labour for Belize; we’re asking that residents, businesses, NGO’s, youth groups, come out and labour for your country Belize and we should keep it clean; nobody else but us. Labour Day is a holiday but we are politely asking that business and residents take ownership of their city called Belize because after all this is a place we call home and we should promote safe and clean neighbourhoods.”

Andrea Polanco

“Okay. Is it the entire city or you will be targeting specific areas?”

Phillip Singh

“Yes, we have onboard with us several groups doing community outreach in terms of cleaning their own area. Our city council staff will be on the Northern Highway; we will be doing major works out that side. Just to mention a few; we have Ms. Sedacy from the community outreach; they will do New Road and Pickstock. They have the BFLA; they’ll be doing behind Civic and Mopan Street. We have St. Luke Methodist coming out; we have Wesley College partaking and some of them will be joining us on the Northern Highway. We will also be having major works done on Mahogany.”

Andrea Polanco

“Between what hours will this be taking place?”

Phillip Singh

“It will be starting at six in the morning. We will have an official say hello and thank you to come out in the morning. We ask that residents go to their respective area and work from there.”

The briefing starts at 5:30 at the San Cas Plaza parking lot. The City Council will be providing garbage bags and gloves.
