F.C. Belize takes game one of the RFG Cup final
Good Evening I’m James Adderly and we welcome you to Sports Monday. Game one of the RFG Cup Championship was staged at the M.C.C. Grounds yesterday where F.C. Belize hosted the Revolutionary Conquerors of Dangriga to kick off the home and away series for this most prestigious football title.
Folks, we’re just one minute into the ballgame when Allen Thurton sets table perfectly for Deon McCauly whose deft touch gives F.C. Belize a 1-zip lead.
It’s not the start the visitors had been hoping for and a few minutes later things almost gets worse on this Deon Flowers foray that he fails to put the force on to be effective.
So the Conquerors try to get busy with Kareem Haylock taking on Vallan Simms in a sprint to the goal but Charlie Slusher intervenes.
Still folks, it seems like F.C. Belize is a team of destiny when they try to double the lead on this left foot shot that crashes into the near upright.
At the other end this spot kick gives Revolutionary Conquerors a shot at Charlie Slusher who is well positioned in goal.
In second half Deon McCauly centres into the danger zone, goalkeeper West mishandles and indeed Jerome James squanders a golden opportunity.
F.C. Belize continues to push the pace which allows Deon McCauly to fire this errant right foot at goal.
At the other end this long distance dial from off the right wing almost ties the ball game for the visitors but Charlie Slusher gets a hand on it.
In the meantime folks this set piece triggered by Vallan Simms looks massive until it inches over the crossbar. When the long whistle finally blows it brings a 1-zip win for F.C. Belize.
The series now heads to the Carl Ramos Stadium this Sunday June tenth for Game two. Question is – will one goal be enough for F.C. to claim the RFG title? – stay tuned.
In cycling news, here is Jim Scott winning Sunday’s sixty-five mile race on the Western Highway presented by Santino’s yesterday beating out Kenny Gladden and Phillip Dawson respectively.
But watch Warren Coye win this three man sprint for fifth place. It’s important because Warren Coye took second in Saturday’s fifty mile ride – and his total tabulation is good enough to give him the overall win and we say congrats to Warren Coye.
In billiards news the Guinness 9-Ball Poll Tournament results from Belmopan shows that Salvapan Shattaz sunk Las Flores 3-2; Magnificent 7 crushed Las Flores 5-zip; Special Effects Spoilers got over Donaldo Welders 3-2 and Salvapan Shattaz beat Cardinal Pharmacy Sharpshooters 4-1.
On Saturday Las Flores will host Special Effects while on Sunday its Cardinal Pharmacy against Donaldo Welders and Magnificent 7 battles Salvapan Shattaz.
In other billiards news, Larry Lisbey defeated Alex White yesterday to win the seventh Annual Joseph and Taylor Carom Championships while Kurk Beard beat out Angel Blair for third place. We say congrats.
Turning to the basketball scene, game two of the Shine Your Light Christian Basketball Competition was staged yesterday at the Civic Center as Cal—Port Flames and M & M Promise Keepers try to seize this inaugural basketball title.
Zachary Young gets the Flames going with nice work under the rim for two points – he would give them 21 points.
Down a game in the best of three series championship, the flames are red hot as Jacob Leslie hits the big three.
Marlon Middleton then strips Leslie to go all the way for two as the M & M team tries to get into the ballgame but at the end of the first quarter the Flames show as 26 to 16 lead.
In second quarter Zachary Young continues his torrid shooting as he gets two off the glass.
So does Jacob Leslie who strikes for two of his game high 32 points as the Flames continue to burn the Promise Keepers.
And in fact if you’re going to make it this easy for Leslie you’re asking for trouble. And at the half Cal-Port Flames show a nine point lead.
In the third quarter, M & M makes a run. Jason lamb hits – he would finish with 22 points.
Gregg Williams also gets busy for the Promise Keepers – he would contribute a team high 25 points.
Unfortunately the charge falls short – Cal-Port Flames ties the series at 1 apiece with a 93 to 79 big W yesterday. The decisive game three comes up this Sunday June tenth, one-thirty p.m. at the Civic Center. You won’t want to miss it.
Finally folks, in Semi-pro Basketball news, the match between Orange Walk Eagles and the San Pedro Tigersharks out at the island has been rescheduled form Friday, June eight to Saturday, June ninth. If you’re in the area make sure you take a look see.
That’s it for now though. We invite you back same time, same place, neat week. I’m James Adderley, Jah over all.
