Conquerors advance to RFG football finals
Good evening I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.
The two finalists of the RFG Insurance Cup Tournament Title emerged over the weekend.
So we head to beautiful Dangriga by the sea where yesterday’s derby pitted Revolutionary Conquerors and Wagiya in game two of a semi-final home and away series.
It’s a slow start for both ball clubs until Harrison Roaches beats his man to push the pill past the Conquerors goal mouth and there’s no stopping Lisbey Castillo who gives Wagiya a 1-zip lead fifteen minutes in.
May we just quickly remind you that in the playoffs the stakes are a lot higher and so is the price.
Nevertheless, Elroy Kuylen tries to come up with the equalizer for the Conquerors with this left foot punch that rises.
Folks, last week the Conquerors took a 3-zip victory in game one which would explain why it’s all Wagiya today and goalkeeper Woodrow West has to intervene to prevent the lead from doubling as we head into intermission.
Fresh into second half Woodrow West has to come up big again and he does.
Wagiya continues to press people and Amich Powell squanders this open look.
It’s more Wagiya on the offensive as the Conquerors remain on the back foot in a 1-nil score.
Dennis Serano puts himself in perfect position to tie the ballgame but he hits the side netting.
We’re at the eighty-seventh minute when Harrison Roaches connects with the pill to push the score to 2-zip.
Alas at this junction of the ballgame Wagiya would need one to tie and two to win. The ballgame ends 2-nil in favour of Wagiya but its Revolutionary Conquerors who advance to the finals with a 3-2 win on aggregate.
Norman Pipersburgh, Revolutionary Conquerors
“We know we were up three goals to none. You know with these kinds of games you could come out a little bit confused, a little bit. We were comfortable with the lead; we didn’t come out with the spirit we wanted but it doesn’t matter as long we prevail and move on to the finals that’s what really matter. It don’t matter how the ballgame end up, it’s who moves on to the finals.”
Kwame Scott
“You now face you former team F.C. Belize; you one a championship with them last year. I’m almost sure you saw them play last night. How do you prepare for F.C. Belize next week?”
Norman Pipersburgh
“Well I don’t really focus and prepare you know. I just know that we are going into the finals and we have to prepare ourselves to finish it all.”
In the other RFG Semi, F.C. Belize was beaten 2-1 by Tex Mar Boys on Saturday night but F.C. who won 1-nil at the M.C.C. advance on a 3-2 aggregate because of the away goal rule.
The championship series now gets on on the third of June at the M.C.C. Grounds with F.C. Belize hosting Revolutionary Conquerors and that promises to be quite and interesting series.
In billiards news, the Guinness 9-ball Tournament play in Belize City saw Tanga take out MJ’s 3 to 2., Mike’s Impossible is Nothing beat River Bottom 3 to 2 and Tanga ran over Sunspree 4 to 1.
Tuesday night River Bottom plays host to Mike’s
At Belmopan on Saturday night Cardinal Pharmacy Sharp Shooters beat Belmopan Spoilers 4 to 1 while Donaldo’s Welders upset the Magnificent 7, 3 to 2.
On Saturday Las Flores faces Magnificent 7 and Belmopan Spoilers take on Donaldo’s Welders.
In cricket news Wicked Eleven is chasing 139 runs right here when Troy Rhaburn catches up with this ball – the fielder catches the ball but does not hold it long enough to establish control – so its ruled a six and we have a ballgame tied at 139 apiece.
Things take a turn for the worse for Excellence of Doublehead when the umpire rules this bowl a wide out which is good for a run which gives Wicked Eleven of Flowers Bank the 140 to 139 win and a pass to the championship round.
In the other semi, Brilliant of Crooked Tree eliminated Sunrise of Lemonal. Thus the championship series gets off this Saturday with Wicked Eleven hosting Brilliant of Crooked Tree at Flowers Bank in game one.
Finally in cycling news, Noel Grajalez was unchallenged as he wins Saturday’s fifty mile race sponsored by Santino’s for Category 4 and 5 riders in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 33 seconds.
Sheldon Graham holds on for second place; Warren Coye settles for third; Ellis Meighan pulls up fourth while Raymond Hyde rounds out the top five.
Hey folks, that’s out show for today. We certainly invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
