Police need help to identify Belcan corpse

Story PictureTonight there’s a body in the Belize City morgue and authorities are trying to solve a mystery.

Jacqueline Godwin, Reporting
Belize City police need your help in identifying this man found dead early this morning. The corpse, described only as wearing dreadlocks and sporting a gold tooth, was discovered on the Belcan Bridge. The obvious injury to the back of the head suggests to authorities that he may have been a victim of either a brutal attack or a hit and run.

G. Michael Reid, Police Press Officer
“The police were called to the Belcan Bridge area sometime around one this morning when they observed a male person lying on the ground with a bicycle nearby and a small butane tank. The individual was rushed to the K.H.M.H., but subsequently died while receiving treatment. We have not yet identified the individual. Certainly the police believe that somebody out there can help and are asking anyone with information to please call the police.”

“We also received information of a white car leaving the area, so we are looking for a white car that may have been involved in this incident. At this point it is still not clear what occurred.”

Police press officer G. Michael Reid would not comment on reports that the victim may have been in possession of a stolen butane tank when he was injured.

G. Michael Reid, Police Press Officer
“That is all up to speculation. We don’t know. Maybe it was being transported from one area to another that is a possibility. We don’t know. We do know that there is no where open that hour at that night that sells butane gas, so you know a lot of question are raised as a result.”

While police are exploring the possibility that their John Doe was knocked down, they did not observe any damages to the gas cylinder and bicycle.

Police say they have been following up on a number of leads but at news time tonight the corpse’s identity has not yet been confirmed. If you can help the police in identifying the body, please contact the nearest police station.
