San Pedro beats O.W. to make football playoffs
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re locked into this issue of Sports Monday. Week ten of the Regent Insurance Cup Tournament found SP Costa Del Sol Nairi’s visiting with Sugar Boys Juventus inside the People’s Stadium yesterday looking for that big win in their final regular season outing that would lead them into the eight team playoffs.
With that in mind Deris Benavides tries to open the scoreboard for the island off this early spot kick – he does beat the wall but not the keeper.
In the meantime we’re not certain if Keddel Middleton knows much about how he gets clear here but he certainly knows how to finish as the visitors go up 1- zip seventeen minutes in.
Folks, we’re at the forty-first minute when Luis Uribio tries to centre into the danger zone and guess what he winds up putting his team up 2-nil while the Juventus fans are definitely upset with their goal keeper’s performance.
The Juventus fans get more upset with their goal keeper, four minutes later, when Deris Benavides punches this floater from long distance and it gives San Pedro a 3-0 lead to take into intermission.
Kelly we’re just one minute into second half Kenny Witzil heads home goal number four for San Pedro and now we seem headed for a rout.
Dean Flowers’ appearance for the second half for Orange Walk certainly helps their cause, only this line Hilberto Caliz comes up with a big time save.
Oliver Hendricks then gets this look at goal but manages to miss the target.
Oliver tries to make amends with this wicked header but again Caliz makes the big save.
At the eight-first minute Oliver Hendricks gets taken down inside the eighteen, right here, which leads to the penalty call.
The job to convert goes to Dean Flowers and he punches it home to get Orange Walk onto the scoreboard.
We’re in the final minutes of this ball game when Dean Flowers uses his left foot to score his second goal of this match for a Juventus team that showed up late in this ball game. San Pedro goes on the post to 4-2 big win and are into the playoffs from Group B with fourteen points.
The other action in this group Revolutionary Conquerors crushed Alpha 5-zip and Santel’s got a default win from Pickstock Lake over the weekend while over in Group A Tex Mar Boys bombed the Belmopan Bandits 4-zip, F.C. Belize edged Wagiya 4-3 while Hankook Verdes and Toledo United Settled for a 2-2 stalemate.
Now here are the official standings at the end of regular season play in the regent’s Cup.
F.C. Belize won Group A with twenty-four points after ten outings; Tex Mar Boys finished with twenty-two points; Wagiya thirteen and Hankook Verdes United twelve as all four teams make it to the playoffs. Belmopan Bandits finished with ten and Toledo United three.
Revolutionary Conquerors won Group B with twenty points; Suga Boys Juventus finished with eighteen; Santel’s seventeen and SP Costa Del Sol Nairi’s made the four team cut with fourteen points. They edged out Alpha, who also had fourteen points, on goal difference while Lake I made history without gaining a point.
Thus the playoffs get on the way this weekend with all eight teams seeing action. On Sat May fifth Tex Mar Boys will host Santel’s at 7:30 p.m. and then on Sunday Wagiya visits Juventus, Revolutionary Conquerors plays host to Hankook Verdes and F.C. Belize will hold court at the M.C.C. Grounds against San Pedro Costa Del Sol.

In Zone 1 Excellence has emerged the #1 seed. Saturday’s match between Sunrise and Surprise which comes up at Lemonal will determine who emerges the #2 seed in this zone.
Over in Zone 2, the defending champion Brilliant is the #1 seed while Wicked 11 has captured the #2 spot and we’ll keep you posted as to when the four team playoffs begin.
In basketball news, the Orange Walk Eagles hosted the Belize Bank Bulldogs in Semi-Pro play Saturday night and very quickly the visitors established their dominance as Tyrone Edwards finds Ty Bradley who goes behind the back to Judson Stubs who delivers two of his team high sixteen points.
Tyrone Edwards then outruns the opposition to strike for two of his eleven pts.
At the other end, Dale Turner takes on the Belize Bank defence to get two the hard way.
But at the end of the first quarter, it’s a sixteen point lead for the Belize Bank Bulldogs.
It’s a lead they would not relinquish – Darwin Leslie crashed the glass for two of his eleven points.
Earl Johnson goes for the long two. He would finish with eleven points also.
Leslie then wants three and he gets three. At the half, the visitors are up by twenty-four.
Things would get a little closer going down the stretch thanks to the play of Lester Cadle who would finish with the game high of thirty-one points, but in the end the Belize Bank wins 80-72.
Hey folks, that’s our show for today. We certainly invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all, I’m, James Adderley
