Injured cyclist complains driver not arrested
Twenty-eight year old Mark Cho, a resident of Red Bank in the Stann Creek district, is lucky to be alive. In February, the young father of two children, was riding his bike home from work around seven at night when he was knocked down by a pickup a half mile down the road to the village. Cho remained unconscious for two weeks at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and also suffered a broken leg and a fractured knee. Today he is no longer hospitalised, but must get around with the use of a wheel chair and homemade walker. But while Cho may have been fortunate to survive the tragedy, he is not a happy man because the person responsible for his injuries has yet to be charged. At the time of the accident police identified the driver of the pickup as twenty-one year old Rudy Aldamez, a resident of the Cayo District. This morning, News Five caught up with Cho at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he had just completed a medical examination.
Mark Cho, Accident Victim
“Well I have two of my legs damaged. I got operated on the left leg and on the right knee; that is what get damaged to me.”
Jacqueline Godwin
“What are the doctors saying about your prognosis?”
Mark Cho
“We just got appointments, we are suppose to come back on the twenty-first of June, back again. They say I have to take care of my legs real, real good and be careful of how to walk, that’s why I need the help of a wheelchair right now.”
“This has affected my family tremendously because I needed that job so much that I had at that time. That is why I was working to provide food for them because my wife is not employed; she stays home and takes care of our babies.”
“No arrests have been made. I tried to contact the police when I reached home and I called them about eight times because I would just like justice to be served on my behalf, you know, and my bike is still at the police station and the lady is still out there freely driving.
“I would like to send an appeal out to the boys’ family as to why they did not consider in their hearts to lend a helping hand to my family, because I have two small babies.”
According to the police, they have not closed the case file on Mark Cho’s accident. In fact, authorities say investigations into the matter are just about completed and charges are pending against Aldamez. It is expected that he will be charged with Driving Without Due Care and Attention and Dangerous Harm.
