Evan Bruhier’s case of sticky fingers

The third court, the one most familiar with Belizeans, the Magistrate Court continues to see a long list of burglary and robbery related charges. The son of a policeman was before the court late Monday evening to answer to a charge for allegedly stealing from a bus conductor. The accused man is twenty-three year old Evan Bruhier, an employee of Blades Ice-Cream. Bruhier, who was unrepresented when he appeared before Magistrate Hurl Hamilton, was read a single charge of Robbery. Allegations are that on June twenty-first he stole a touch screen cell phone and a beach cruiser bicycle—a total value of four hundred and fifty dollars—from bus Conductor, Oscar Dimas. In court, Bruhier pleaded not guilty to the charge and bail was offered in the sum of three thousand dollars. He is due back in court on July thirty-first.
His father must be pretty disappointed. Robbery is not simply a crime of dishonesty, it is also an assault on a human, because the property is taken violently from the victim. It is such a big step across the line of criminality, it is usually not the first crime a person commits.
I think we need a formally organised system of a taste of jail followed by a programme of closely supervised rehabilitation for first-time, non-violent offenders. Give those people [never violent offenders!] one chance to correct the error of their ways, as a one-time investment in trying to return a person to the right path.
He appears to be such a quiet, humble person when he’s on his palatas rounds. Easy river runs deep indeed, if he’s indeed guilty of the charges against him. Nonetheless, if he’s guilty he should be committed to prison just like any other common criminal because robbery is a serious offence & it’s more than likely that he’s done it before….just saying!
