April the tapir turns twenty-four
She’s one of our favourite animals and today April the tapir celebrated her twenty-fourth birthday. As is customary, this morning students sang Happy Birthday and presented April with her cake, made of dissolved dog food and topped with kumquats and carrots. Yummy. The special event for the beloved specimen of our national animal is hosted every year by her caretakers at the Belize Zoo to promote awareness of the country’s wildlife. Special guests at this year’s ceremony were students from the Small World and Little Treasures preschools. Tapirs in captivity have a life expectancy of up to thirty years.
