Miss Belize still fundraising for Miss Universe bid

Story PictureMiss Belize Maria Jeffery continues to pound the pavement tonight trying to round up support for her participation in the Miss Universe competition scheduled for May twenty-eighth in Mexico City. Following a fundraising radioathon in San Pedro last weekend, Jeffery has been able to pay the ten thousand dollar entrance fee that will guarantee her a spot on the big stage. Until she leaves for Mexico later this month, Jeffery says she will be concentrating on her appearance.

Maria Jeffery, Miss Belize
“I’ll be there for almost a month and we still need some help from everyone, especially we’re calling for Belize City because like I said, most of our sponsorship has been from San Pedro and I’m from Belize City, so we’re trying to get some people to help us from here; if you own a boutique that would be helpful. You know whatever it is, five dollars, ten dollars. We had mentioned the bank, Scotia Bank, Pageants Belize you can donate money in there if you don’t want to contact us directly. You can also contact Miss Margaret Johnson, her phone number is 660-7850, and you can provide us with whatever you need. We also have the raffle tickets and I tell you, it’s a great, great prize, an all expense paid trip for only two dollars a ticket.”

“Now I know most of the clothing you are asking for is the thirty days that you’ll be there but as far as your costumes for being on stage, do you have those in hand yet?”

Maria Jeffery
“We actually have two in the making however we haven’t finished paying for them as yet, so we also need funds to finish paying for that. We need our final outfit as well. The competition evening gown, we haven’t gotten that as yet, but we’re just glad at least we can participate you know. But we’re feeling it’ll come in eventually, we’ll get the support. But we need to show up with the costume, the evening gown and the national gift which we’re hoping to be jade.”

Maria Jeffery will leave Belize on the first of May.
