While Wright recovers, Bishop Martin takes over
Following emergency surgery late last week, tonight Catholic Bishop Dorrick Wright is recovering from the procedure to stop a subdural haematoma or bleeding in the brain. While his prognosis is good, the recovery process is expected to take weeks. This afternoon, Bishop Martin explained how the Church is supporting Wright and how his absence will be handled.

“He seems to be doing well in the sense that he has a positive attitude towards his debilitating condition and that is of great importance that he be positive and that he be hopeful that he will regain his health and his strength.”

According to Bishop Osmond Peter Martin, for the next couple of weeks Bishop Dorrick Wright will be taking it easy and regaining his health at the Pallotine Nursing Facility.

“Presently, the doctors want him to be there for two weeks and I guess they will give us the green light after those two weeks.”
“He has had a diabetic condition for quite a while now. We are not sure if it was the result of a diabetic condition or it could be the result of a fall or it could be the result of a knock on the head. We don’t know that yet but one thing is evident, that there was bleeding occurring and that it could have bad consequences.”
While Wright convalesces, Bishop Martin will assume responsibilities as Catholic Bishop of Belize.

“I was never retired; I was still active in pastor work because I have great appreciation for pastor work. I have been doing it for forty-eight years, so if I can do it for a few more years, I thank the Lord for that.”
“Even though I have a debilitating back problem I am still able to move around and carry out some duties, so I am disposed to do that.”
Martin says ever since word got out about Bishop Wright’s condition, the congregation’s support has been overwhelming.
Bishop O.P. Martin
“I am very, very grateful of the concern of the people lifting up Bishop Wright in their prayers and it’s a manifestation of fraternal love which we want to encourage.”
“We are a people giving in to prayer. We give priority to God’s generosity, his providential love, and we pray in that context that God may use his power to heal him and to restore him to his duties.”

Until Bishop Wright returns to active duty, Monsignor Calistus Cayetano will conduct service at the Holy Redeemer Cathedral with assistance from Bishop Martin. In a correction to our report on Tuesday, Wright’s surgery was performed at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, not Belize Medical Associates.
