3 die in early morning collision on the Northern Highway

A police officer and two others are dead tonight after a horrible traffic accident on the Northern Highway in the wee hours of this morning. Police Constable Dion Makin Junior was behind the wheels of an SUV that collided into a car. In the cops’ vehicle were five others who are believed to have been partying at a bar in Ladyville and were heading to Orange Walk Town, but it is not confirmed whether the officer and passengers were intoxicated. News Five’s Delahnie Bain reports from the scene of the deadly traffic accident.

A collision between a Saturn View SUV and a Saturn car has left three persons dead and three injured. The fatal accident occurred at mile eleven and a quarter on the Northern Highway shortly before three o’clock this morning. The car, which was driven by twenty-five year old police constable Dion Makin Junior, was heading toward Orange Walk while the twenty-nine year old Lawrence Chow was driving the SUV to Belize City. But Makin reportedly lost control and swerved head on into Chow’s vehicle. Kevin Dawson was among the crowd that gathered after hearing the loud impact; he describes the horrific scene.

Kevin Dawson, Witness

“When they were taking out the people out of the vehicle, it was so horrible. One man was bleeding from the neck like his whole neck was nearly off because it was hanging over and everything is just like a nightmare, a disaster. That is as far as I see.”

Delahnie Bain

“Were you able to tell how many people there were in all?”

“In all there were five people in the car and there was one person in the next vehicle.”

“The Chinese man was by himself?”

P.C. Makin and his companions, twenty-two year old Edwin Elvis Crawford and a female, died instantly from severe head injuries. The other two persons who were in the car are nineteen year old Helen Canelo and twenty-two year old Jay Lewis Avilla. Chow, Avilla and Canelo survived with varying degrees of injuries. Canelo managed to free herself from the wreckage, but according to, Dawson, the car had to be pried open for the other passengers to be removed.

Kevin Dawson

“There were people screaming out and a lady was asking for help and there was bleeding. When we came outside, the fire service cut the top with the torch because the vehicle was so mashed up. They took them out and some of them were already dead. They were bleeding from—the whole road was full of blood and the driver of the next vehicle he got hurt in his stomach that was a Chinese man. It was like a head on collision because the two vehicles, the engines they are mashed in the vehicle. All of the engines mashed, the whole vehicle—you don’t even know if it’s a vehicle because it’s so smashed up. The engines, everything is in a mess and that is all I see.”

In the midst of the chaos, Dawson says the emergency response was speedy and well-organized.

Kevin Dawson

“As it happened they arrived, the nurses were doing their jobs, the policeman, the fire service, they were all good in support doing their job until everything cleared up this last night. And up to this morning the police were still out here working along with the families. So I think the police they did a good job and I thank them for that.”

Canelo has been released from the hospital while Avila is in stable condition at the K.H.M.H.  Chow is believed to have been transferred to a private hospital. Delahnie Bain for News Five.

Listen people, not all the witnesses you hear giving account of incidences on the news are true. It hurt me a whole lot to see and hear Kevin Dawson lying through his teeth on camera. He was not there. I live about 300 yards from the accident scene and by 2:25 was on the spot. The 3 deceased died almost on impact and no one was screaming for help. My nephew and a neighbor helped Ms Canelo out of the car and laid her on the side of the road but was unable to get Mr Avila out as the firemen had to pry the door open. He was bleeding from the head and Ms Canelo was complaining of pain in the left leg and arm. Response from the proper authorities were slow not speedy as was mentioned. Ladyville police took more than half and hour and the ambulance was much later. The forensic team did not arrive until almost 4am. No blood was on the road. Mr Dawson was seen after 5 the morning and just likes to tell lies. The firemen never cut any part of the vehicle. Most of us were on the scene until almost 6am. The firemen washed the transmission oil from off the highway after a police attach to Ladyville formation and 1 of my neighbor Mr Charles Pennel removed the wreckage from off the highway. I wish that people would tell the truth. All had to be done was to tell the reporter that they did not see anything. I know now that not all witnesses are telling the truth. We pray for the deceased loved ones for strength and also for speedy recovery for Ms Canelo and Mr Avila.

……….It is very interesting to see that people can be so hateful and take the time out of their miserable life to torment citizens who try to contribute to this society. I do not see the importance of ms Catalina’s msg. It is irrelevant to the news broadcasted on the 20th… All this does to our country is low rate the belizeans and it is because of people like CATALINA. Does she not know that there are so many people that read the news everyday. ALL WE CARE ABOUT IS KNOWING WHO DIED AND WHY. … Kevin was simply sharing his experience it is too bad that CATALINA AUTHORS IS JUST BEING VINDICTIVE….

Edwin was such a quiet and caring person. He will be missed by his family in Belize and abroad. My condolences goes out to my Uncle Elvis and my Aunt Carmita. My prayes also goes out to all of the families that has been affected by this tragic event. May they all rest in peace.

While we appreciate the condolences of the sensible people ,we are forced to deal with ignorant people who dare to suggest things with no proof. The driver my nephew was not drinking, it was simply an accident. Even the best drivers can loose control of a vehicle. Take time out to realize that he has a child and a mother who will be hurt by your insensitive comments. We thank everyone who helped and supported all the families in the difficult time. Remember that next accident victim can be one that you love just as we loved our own nephew, son, and daughter.

  18. Sad eyes says:

I know the chinese man involved in this accident and I could almost say that its his fault. His vehicle has BLUE headlights and its blinding! I passed him on the road one night and his headlights literally blinded me from seeing anything. the police need to investigate these accidents thoroughly because they can be avoided. I’m not talking about the halogen headlights that most modern vehicle has. Its BLUE! like with blue bulb or some $#!%. sad that there was lost of lives.
