Lake I Boyz rally to take hoops title
Good evening I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.
The WIN Belize Basketball Competition reached money time Friday night inside the Civic Center as Acros Whirlpool found itself in a must win situation against the red hot Lake I Boyz in the three game senior male championship series.
It’s a pretty good start for the Acros team as Travis Lennon sinks 2 of his 18 game points in the early going.
Ronald Rivers, who would finish with the team high 21 points, strikes for 3 right here.
And then Kurt Burgress, who would post 18 points, shows his prowess in the paint as Acros Whirlpool rolled to a 31-22 lead in the first quarter.
The Whirlpool momentum continues into the second quarter as Kirk Thompson floats for the lay.
Travis Lennon remains hot and he gets 2 more and there’s no stopping Kirk Burgress in the paint.
Acros Whirlpool leads 42-37 at the half.
In the third quarter Lake I Boyz make their move – Jerome “Penny” Ellis slices through for 2 of his 12 game points.
Ellis then dishes to Eden Serrano who come up with 2 of his game high 24 points in heavy traffic but at the end of three it’s still Acros Whirlpool with a 57-52 lead.
However in the final quarter it’s all Lake I Boyz. Devon Smith goes to the left hand and that falls. Tyronne Edwards wants 3 – he gets 3 and would total a double digit 21 points.
Edwards then gives Lake I Boyz the lead with 3 from the other side of the court – his team would not look back after that.
Edwards takes over in the fourth quarter; his team would score 31 points as they go on to post the 83-78 Big W to sweep Acros Whirlpool in two straight and we say congratulations.
On the female side we pick up the action in the fourth quarter as Maria Chang Eagles face Advance Flames in the pivotal game three Friday night.
Sylvia Clarke finds the cutting Shirley Codd who gets 2 of her 19 points.
Codd then dishes to big Anna Thurton who goes glass for 2.
While at the other end the Flames simply can’t buy a bucket late in this ballgame as Maria Chang goes on to post the 61-51 big W. They grab the title after loosing game one and won two in a row and we say congratulations.
Turning to the cycling scene, thirty-two riders suited up for the sixty-four mile Cross Country Ride for Category 4 and 5 riders sponsored by the Santino Club yesterday – and they’re off from the start in front at Loma Luz inside Santa Elena.
This six man crew led by George Abraham including Delmar Sutherland, Jim Scott and Ellis Meighan try to make the early break.
However, at Roaring Creek George Abraham steps out to take command of things on a solo flight.
Can you believe it folks, Abraham would run all the way to Belize City alone – well he does.
And here is his triumphant entry as he crosses the finish line in 3 hours, 40 minutes, 36 seconds and we say congratulations.
Three and a half minutes later Ellis Meighan struggles in to take second place.
Warren Coye edges then Jim Scott for third place while former Cross Country champ Collet “Bunas” Mehia rounds out the top five.
In the meantime the real Cross Country comes up on Holy Saturday and here’s B.C.A. president Melvin Torres to fill in the blank spaces.

“We still di look fi prize money. We refer to it as prize money because we get the majority of it but from eight place to fifteenth place is nothing yet. Eight is eight hundred dollars and from eleventh to fifteenth is one hundred dollars each. So those are the prizes we still looking for. Hopefully before the big day we can have all prize money in.”
“Again to come back to the more interesting part of the event that you talk about – how much foreigners we expect – we have about twenty-five foreigners who have been vetted and have given the okay to come in. That is except the border town riders; the border town riders will come in just as local riders, that is riders from the Cancun area, the Chetumal area and even from as far as Ciudad Del Carmen because we had allowed them to come in on the border town pass although they are not in the neighbouring border towns then in the Peten area and those areas in Guatemala they will be able to participate. We have seven American riders that have been vetted to come in, eight Guatemalans, one Nicaraguan; we would have to say a U.S./Jamaican rider who is already in country doing his final preparations and I think that we continue to get three riders way up from Guadalajara.”
“At the finish line again we already spoken to the police that we will not allow any persons…just important personnel will be going into the track like for example the press core, people from the official core, people from the final judging core, those people will be allowed but we will not allow people just to go into the track and to meet with the cyclists and that sort of thing.”
“In terms of the traffic control, we intent to only use motorcycles. We only use to use motorcycles for officials; all other motorcycles who is not in uniform to participate in the event we will ask the police to put them in jail.”
