Police Corporal shot in the chest while responding to home invasion
A cop was shot in the line of duty on Tuesday night. Corporal Victor Lima is tonight in critical condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Lima was injured in the chest at a Hattieville house where a home invasion was in progress. News Five’s Andrea Polanco reports.
Andrea Polanco, Reporting
Around ten o’clock on Tuesday night, Hattieville police responded to a report of a home invasion at this residence in the community. Upon their arrival, a man exited the house and Police Corporal Victor Lima was met by gunfire.
Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer
“What happened is that Hattieville Police responded to a home invasion, what you call a aggravated burglary and upon entering the house, Corporal Lima was along with other officers and as he opened the door at that scene. The gunman fired two shots.”
The gun man is thirty year old Delford Slusher of the Bainsville Area in Hattieville. He has been arrested and charged for attempted murder. It is alleged that Slusher was at the residence querying about drugs.
Voice of: Francelia Gillett, Mother of Shakira Smith
“She start to explain to me that somebody went inna her house and hold her up with gun and tell her deh come look fi drugs.”
Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood
“So far investigators have come up with that theory also; the thing is that he had these women held at gun point and upon the police entering, he turned his vengeance towards the police.”
The two persons inside the house at the time were Shakira Smith and a seventeen year old girl. Smith’s mother says that whilst the man claims he was there for drugs, her daughter doesn’t meddle in that kind of thing.
“Deh come tell me this morning that how deh have my daughter dah the police station because wah police man get shot; I nuh really know weh gone on. I come because I concerned cause my daughter she easy she nuh into no drugs, no simpleness suh I nuh know weh really di go on.”
Police Corporal Victor Lima remains hospitalized at the K.H.M.H. in the Intensive Care Unit. His prognosis is uncertain.
“We are not sure; he is critical right now and we are just asking for your prayers and your support.”

PM Barrow should stop paying the gang members and start to use that money and get bullet proof vests for the front line officers.
Why take him to court? hope he gets a beating at least as he will surely walk free anyway.
1. I’m praying for the total recovery of a brave officer. They’re not paid enough to get shot in the chest.
2. Instead of putting gangsters on the payroll, use that money to buy bulletproof vests for all officers on the street. Trained officers are a big investment, we need to invest in keeping them healthy.
3. Why in the world did Slusher get arrested alive? The officers showed more restraint than I think I would have.
4. Yet another case of the deadly danger posed by drug traffickers — they use guns, they murder for money. Whether drugs were in the house is not important, but the gangster believed they were there, and came with his tool of the drug trade — a gun.
Nano leadership in the country just corruption and mayhem Belize now has a rogue gov. A failed state.
watcha strangle da fool mein…dem kinda !@$$ can’t continue d happen, especially to men who are there to protect.
huh how sad now lets see if the commission of police will help o be by the CPL side!!!! this y there is a Police association to help police officer. were are the bullet proof vest that were donated to the police by the US huh
Let me say it again people.Until criminals are being convicted for heinous crimes such as murders this trend will continue. If our judges keep doing thesame thing then we are going to keep getting thesame results.
is it my mind or is Fitzroy yearwood getting fatter by the day…
Instead of legalizing marijuana, let us focus on the safety of our Police officers. Maybe we can ask the US government for some surplus bullet proof vests. Issue them to officers as they go out on duty and check them back in after their shift so that they are accounted for and not get lost like police weapons that are always being lost. Move the police force into the 21st century please.
My prayers for CPL Lima, one of the most modest and hard working persons in the department.
I cant not tolerate to imagine if any thing would get complicated in his recovery so hope is does get the best care available for him deserve the Best Care available. Trust in God.
just start heng they mein start with all the ones who commit crimes against children then public officiers!!!
Oh Boy……. Only In Belize,…..Only in Belize. A Police Officer gets blasted in his chest and the perpetrator walks off to the station on his own two feet and, is charged by the arresting officer with, attempted murder on one of his colleagues.
Let me tell you what that news item would have been anywhere else: ” A man was shot at least 50 times by Police when caught in attempted home invasion with a gun in his hand.” End of story.
And yet, when law enforcement officer killed a criminal in the line of duty, the first thing the mother or another relative to the ‘victim’ will say, ‘you don’t need to kill him, just shoot him in his foot’. Or ‘they (the officers) killed him like if he’s a dog.’ BS!!!! When a criminal shoots, he doesn’t aim for the foot, he shoots to damage you big time or to kill you.
There are many ideas about what is the right thing to do to stop the violence in Belize. My solution would be to clean them all. If the government doesn’t want to do it then allow some of us to go back there and clean house. You got to fight violence with violence and only that way will this wangsters are going to stop stealing and shooting people.
