112 people sworn in as new Belizeans
This week, more than a hundred people were officially sworn in as citizens of Belize. According to a press release from the Immigration Department, the one hundred and twelve men, women and children are originally from places like Bulgaria, Russia, Guatemala, and Jamaica. In his capacity as Commissioner of the Supreme Court, Winston Smiling administered the oath of allegiance. Applicants were subjected to a number of interviews by officials from the Immigration Department as well as security checks by the Police Department and Interpol. Final approval for citizenship is granted by the Minister responsible for Immigration and the Nationality Advisory Committee. The ceremony took place at the George Price Centre for Peace and Development in Belmopan.
