Library holds fair to promote reading

Story PictureThis morning, the sixth annual book fair was launched at the Leo Bradley Library in Belize City. This year’s event is being held under the theme “Reading Develops the Mind.” According to Coordinator Raymond Bradley, the fair and open day included a read aloud and story telling competition as well as other opportunities to instil a love of reading.

“So far we have about eight, nine, seventeen entries for the Story Telling Competition. In the Story Telling Competition the child writes his or her own stories bearing towards the theme of the book fair.”

“In the past we only used to have about two or three schools attending or three to four participants but this morning alone we had over twenty participants.”

“We also have in the library we have little games that they could have played. We have one that we call Reading Bingo, games that we develop our self. We have our reading Fortune, that’s another one; this game teaches you how to use the library, and how to find your book basically when you come to the library.”

Winner of the Read Aloud Competition was Jamie Jones from Belize Elementary School, while Dionne Habet, also of B.E.S., took top honours in the Story Telling Contest. It would have been a clean sweep for the primary school but St. John Vianney’s Arianne Dougal claimed third in Story Telling. According to Bradley, the library has noted an increase in its membership this year with just over two thousand card holders.
