Y.M.C.A. programme helps kids improve school skills

Story PictureThe Young Men’s Christian Association has been quietly assisting a number of Belizean children with their primary school education. Presently the after school programme caters to fifty youths whose families would not be able to afford the extra help for boys and girls who may be struggling with their schoolwork.

These students not only benefit from the tutoring and computer classes but they are also involved in sports and music activities. Today, the Y.M.C.A. through an ongoing working relationship with the Y of Greater St. Louis in the United States, received thirty recorders. The instruments will become the property of the children who are now enrolled in the musical programme. According to Y.M.C.A.’s Executive Director Clara Cuellar, the overall objective goes beyond the music.

“Besides developing the total child, we also are aware that different children will blossom with different types of programmes that you give them because they have different talents. And the music programme is part of our broader philosophy that we feel we need to offer many things to help to bring discipline, focus, joy, fun, and a celebration of their talents and gifts.”

“And today you all receive a worthy gift in the form of musical instruments. How did all of this come about?”

“The youths who are here are a part of what is called is Campus Y, which is from Washington University in St. Louis. We have an outstanding relationship with the St. Louis Y.M.C.A.”

Rachel Amthor, Member, YMCA, St. Louis
“It was really fun because they were so proud. They have been practising for six weeks and they are already really good. I remember playing recorders when I was a kid and I don’t think I really enjoyed it as much as it looks like they enjoyed it.”

The children are assisted by well known Belizean musician Jason Guerrero. Meanwhile the U.S. students have also been receiving lessons of their own. As part of their studies they have been touring different sites to learn more about the environment and the impact of tourism on local communities.
