J.R. of Orange Walk wins Guinness 9 ball pool competition
Good evening I’m James Adderley and we welcome you to this issue of Sports Monday. Week 2 of the R.F.G. Cup Tournament brought Santels of Cayo to the People’s Stadium for its date with Alpha Glitters of Orange Walk.
And the home team tries to strike first off this long range left foot from Augustine Mendez that almost gets past the Cayo keeper Jamie Brooks.
The visitor’s response comes from Marlon Mesa who fires this right foot at veteran goalkeeper Giovanni Rodriguez only to find the side netting.
Santels then goes to the set piece for offence with this bomb from Walter Castellanos which forces Rodriguez into flight but the ball screams over the cross bar.
In the meantime, we’ve got to tell Cyril Simmons he just made Giovanni’s day with this give away from point blank range and at the half we have a scoreless ballgame.
In 2nd half Donnie Tun tries to move the scoreboard with this wicked grass head burner but Jamie Brooks is up to the task.
Again the Orange Walk team attacks off the set piece from Thombra Acrabador to launch this wicked header and again Jamie Brooks shines.
At the other end, this header from Cyril Simmons beats Giovanni Rodriguez but he gets rescued by his defence.
And in fact even as Rodriguez continues to live dangerously his defence hangs tough.
It’s Marlon Mesa of Santels on the hunt again and this time he does force Rodriguez to come up with the save himself in money time. At the end of regulation we have nil-nil stalemate.
In other Group B play over the weekend, Suga Boys Juventus jerked Revolutionary Conquerors 3-2 while San Pedro Costa Del Sol Nairi’s doubled up Lake I 4 to 2 inside the M.C.C. Grounds.

Turning to the Billiards scene, the Belize Billiards Federation presented its 8 Ball Competition at the Multi-Complex Building in Orange Walk over the weekend and while Advance Advertising of Belize City might have been first to arrive at the finals of this double elimination tournament, they got mashed up in back to back fashion by JR Pool Club of Orange Walk who captured this years title, and we say congratulations.
JR Pool Club was led by a 15 year old player, Niam Rosado, who is disposing of his opponent by controlling the 6 ball to sink the precious 9. Young Rosado emerged as the Most Valuable Player of this tournament and we say congratulations.
Turning to the basketball scene, the Win Belize Senior League Basketball Competition continue to roll inside the City Center. On Friday night Maria Chang Eagles downed Gwen Liz Stars 57 to 38 and on Sunday Maria Chang Eagles came back to roll over Advance Flames 50 to 42.
On the male side, Friday night saw Reggae Boyz dance pass UB Jaguars 73 to 70 while, on Sunday, S.J.C. Wildcats needed overtime to roll into to the win column stopping Reggae Boyz 95 to 94.
Finally, the 25th Belmopan Cycle Classic is set for this Sunday, March 11th in a 100 mile package that runs from the Constitution Park here in Belize City to Belmopan and back. It is sponsored by Santino’s Red Bull. Don’t miss it.
