Barrow demands investigation of Moises Cal
And while the presentation of the Musa administration’s budget will be the highlight of tomorrow’s House meeting, Dean Barrow says on the adjournment he’ll call for a financial investigation of Moises Cal by local financial and law enforcement authorities.
Dean Barrow
“The Belize Police Department and the Financial Intelligence Unit should indicate that they are publicly investigating this matter or that they are going to investigate this matter because while we don’t know, there is at least a suggest that the monies originated from here in Belize and those two agencies of law enforcement, it seems to me, would need to ask where on earth did Cal get this kind of money given that he was a public officer and had, as far as the public knows, no other source of income. So I think it does require local investigation, but because of the political implications, I’m sure that that won’t happen. Nevertheless, we in the U.D.P. will call for it and we mean to do so in the House on Friday at the reading.”
Much to Barrow’s surprise, when we checked this afternoon with Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit, Geraldine Davis, she told us that she has commenced an investigation into Moises Cal’s activities. According to Davis, that investigation must first establish whether Cal did indeed carry large sums of cash into Panama, and secondly, if he did, did that money originate in Belize. The F.I.U. has not yet spoken to Cal, nor have we, as the former ambassador has failed to answer or return numerous phone calls to his residence.
